Found a 94 YJ for sale and have questions

Hi! First time here so posted this in the newbie section first...

I've been scouring used car sites for a couple months now looking for a decent, affordable jeep. I kind of liked the newer body style with the round headlights but found this:

link to pictures~
94 YJ pictures by jasonluvr - Photobucket
* $ 5500 *
1994 Jeep Wrangler (YJ) - Square headlight stlye
4.0L Fuel injected engine
155,000 ish miles
Auto transmsission
I have two complete tops and two sets of doors, Hard top with full steel doors and soft top with half doors.
Jeep has a 4" lift (lift springs), 31" tires, SYE, and Sway bar disconnects.

I thought it looked like a decent buy, and will be taking a friend who builds vehicles that he races and goes mudding in to help look it over at the test drive.

I was looking for advice on what to look out for, any problems that this year may be notorious for or just common things that may be bad, go wrong or break soon as I drive off in it. (what would you do if you were looking to buy it)

I would be using it as a part time mail delivery vehicle and my daily driver. I will not be able to work on this myself and dont want to get in over my head putting $$ into it just to keep it running, but figured it would hold up better than anything else I've used to do mail in.

Any and all advice, comments, funny stories etc. would be greatly appreciated!

What's the price?

I would check:
Fluids,
Frame, rear at shackles mounts rusts bad, and near front power steering mount area
Floor boards front and rear.
Make sure 4wd works
make sure heat or ac work
look at underside for abuse.

Other than what 4Jeepn said you shouldn't have too much to worry about. '93-'95 were the best years for the YJ. As long as the rust and abuse are/were kept to a minimum it sounds like a decent find.

Only real thing to look out for is rust... Take a magnet with you to check for bondo in the typical rust areas.

I asked about rust and the dude said it has a small dent with rust and some windshield, both surface rust.

Ummm so far I've learned from my search for a jeep that they rust under the doors (and people diamond plate that) and at the windshield & tub (I am assuming inside floor?) and frame....

For $5500 you could get a nice TJ or I saw a nice 2003 Rubicon with 150,000 miles and nice wheels and tires for $3500 on my local craigslist. That YJ doesn't look bad but it is a 94 with 155,000 miles. If you could get it for $3000 then not too bad of a deal. This is my opinion.

That also greatly depends on what part of the country you are buying in.

I'm east of Kansas City. I have found a few cheaper 3500 to 5000 but they are either manual or 5 states away and/or look pretty rough. I found a 5 speed 97 with 150000 mi for just under 35000 real close and was tempted but cant really use a stick shift for mail (although I have done it! not fun!) and it was in the inner city so figured it would be a p.o.s.

This one was a decent price (although I will see if he will come down on price at all) and I only found a couple that had dual tops and/or doors. Since this one did its the main reason I considered this year of jeep/this vehicle.

The one thing that worries me is that it has been used for rock crawling etc. and used extremely hard and since there are swaybar disconnects I am assuming it has been used for that at least some offraod! I cannot have another money sucker!

But if y'all have an amazing cheap jeep I'd sure buy it from you! lol

The c/l ad is probably some sort of spam or something. craigslist warns you not to respond to ads that sound to good to be true. and a 2003 wrangler rubicon for 3400 sounds to good to be true

Replied to a few and its always the same they will ship it and we can go through ebay motors or something like that, its far away in a shipping container (which was already paid by another person who backed out of the deal) They are going over to the war or getting a divorce or some who haw like that I flag em when I see em now! Its a BIG OLE SCAM!

I seen one on craiglist one time it was a 2005 wrangler with a soft and hard top. 4 inch lift with brand new 33 inch tires. 4.0 5 speed, went on to say it was regeared the whole nine.i emailed the person and they said the JEEP was located in berkeley springs wv which is about 20 minutes from me. the JEEP looked good in the pic BUT after looking at the picture some more i noticed there was alot of palm trees in the picture and i have lived in west virginia all my life and have never seen a palm tree here.

Unless I can test drive it, there is no way I would buy it or even put money down.

I HAVE A NEW QUESTION!!!!!

My friends hubby is telling me NOT to buy this jeep, that it wouldnt be any good for delivering mail or as a daily driver it is only good for trails etc because thats what its set up for. (the lift springs, big tires and swaybar disconnects) He says its just a trail jeep.

Dont some/alot/most of the people here use their jeeps for everything?

Should I try to find a stock jeep instead?

I would be driving on country roads lots of ruts, washboard roads, potholes, dust, mud, gravel, snow, ice, sleet, rain yadda yadda about 4-6 hrs at a time depending on weather. And it will also be my only vehicle.

whadda ya think????

Stock jeeps usually handle just as bad if not worse then lifted ones but lifted with bigger tires means lots of gas money! If you want it it's up to you... I daily drive mine

NICE!!

So you think it would do fine for delivering mail? (couldnt get too much worse than a P.O.C. kia sliding into ditches when its muddy or snowy!) Are 31's pretty big? Whats the standard size? How much more gas do the big tires make you use? ( I feel like a 3 yr old "Mommy why is the sky blue") lol

Well 31s aren't really big but big enough that you'll be getting maybe 10 - 15 mpg if that, delivering mail that's a ton of stop and go
