Front Axle seal

On my 95' YJ, I noticed gear oil coming out and being slung all over the inside of my front right fender.....so I took a saturday and decided to replace the seal. After the complete spindle and axle removal off the passenger side of the front axle, I pressed the new seal in by taking off the vacuum disconnect cover and prying it in with a 1&3/4" socket. I believe I got it to seat properly. well, as usual....a few days later I noticed the new gear oil still coming out of that side of the axle. One thing I wasn't sure about.....the axle itself had a ring on it by the seal that looked like it had been machined, but I thought that might have been where it rubbed on the old worn seal. IDK. Either way I'm sick of adding gear oil to my front diff. every week or so. Any Ideas?

i would say either keep putin in the oil or replace the shaft that groove is from the old seal

hmmmmmm thats what I was afraid of. My dad said that (not a jeeper, but he's been a shadetree mechanic his whole life) and I wasn't quite convinced. So its supposed to be smooth all the way to the splines? whats the best front axle upgrade kit?

a dana 44 or bigger out of a fullsize somethinf with lockout hubsbut if you want to keep the stock set up i would go with Warn stuff they are pretty tough

What about going to a 1pc dana 30 shaft on that side? From say a xj or tj? Would get ride of the vaccum disco and I would think add some beef to the design with it being 1pc vs 2.

Are the splines the same on that xj/zj axle? and is it on a 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern? I mean....what are the logistics of putting something like that in? Just a straight swap?

Hey thanks for that link...sounds like a good option for me. So those TJ guys don't have to deal with that vacu discon. crap? I'm thinking maybe of getting a set of high strength front axles designed for a TJ then, I guess. Are you sure splines line up and everything?

Both have 27 spline inner shafts for the dana 30.

Yeah, All of the carriers are the same between the models. You just have to find somethign to cover up your disconnect hole on the axle. I believe there are some companies that make a plate for that.

Also, Thanks for the link. I have been looking for information on this swap for a while. This definately will move up on my list a bit. It should be easy enough to make the block off plate out of a chunk of steel. Just drill four holes and yer done.

So does anybody know if these tj axles by warn or whoever are really that strong? I mean, I've kinda heard talk like you would always be limited with the dana 30 on that spline count. Is that true or would better alloy axles give you pretty substantial strength up front?

check with national bearings they make a sleave repair kit for this problem that works. no link or part number for you, but I've seen them used on jeeps, and used them myself on other makes
