Hardened steel welded to cold steel...

It happened last Saturday, but we learned the fun way that when you weld hardened steel to cold steel you re-temper the hardened steel and create a weak spot in the metal. These conditions plus a high speed run down some sand trails and the fun began! Here were the results...






I found a new place to carry the spare, but it makes it a challenge to put the top up...
I built the carrier out of 2" square stock so I just slid the top into the receiver and strapped it to the bumper...

The failed pin location...

550 cord holds the tag on for a bit..


Watch what you're welding. This ALMOST turned out bad as we were going close to 30 mph and the guy behind me almost hit it.

Wow, at least nobody got hurt.

Those hubs are normally only tempered where the bearing rides. Or was that a home brewed apparatus?

It was a home brew 1 inch tractor pin welded to quarter inch plate.
