Has anyone removed their cat?

My cat is shot and was wondering if removing it would help or hurt anything. I don't run this thing on the road so its not an issue. What are your thoughts. I really don't want to spend the money for a new cat as I plan on a SBC swap in the near future.

Yes mine was plugged so I removed it no problems at all. Removing a cat from a pre obd2 vehicle will not affect it you only have one O2 sensor before the cat so fuel trim will not be affected.

None of my yjs have had cats. First thing i do is cut the exhaust out and glass pack them with no cat haha. I put the glass pack where the cat would be under the skid plate. May even run better I dunno.

There should be an open season on house cats.

If you live in am emissions state, you will fail your smog check, otherwise, go for it.

how did you work around the phlange piece connecting the down pipe to the cat? i'm looking to do the same thing here as well, but it looks like if i cut from the front of the cat, the down pipe is curved strangely going into the phlange and i'm not sure how to tackle this.
suggestions? thanks!

You could just hollow out the cat and leave it in place, assuming you don't have emissions requirements.

He said he doesn't drive it on the road In the first post.

I cut mine off, and just went to a local muffler shop and said "I need a piece of pipe welded between here and here". It was like $20.00 or somehthing like that

If you had said "to replace my catalytic converter", they would be obligated by Federal law to turn you away. That's because it's ILLEGAL for them to do ANY alterations of that sort. You were smart NOT to use the words "catalytic converter" when dealing with the muffler shop.

Alot of small shops will do it no matter what, then they sell the old cat.
