Heading to Yellowstone

I'm new to this site buy sounds very interesting and exciting. I have a 1992 Jeep Wrangler and I'm leaving NY and heading to West Yellowstone very soon. I have made this trip several times in my 1 ton dually but never this far in my jeep. Just looking for some good pointers from anyone who has traveled the distance and has something to share!! Very excited!

You don't mention what year or engine you have or any mods....all of which can affect your trip...

Honestly, find a semi that is driving as fast as you want to go, and just follow him. Let him push the wind for you. There is not much to see in that whole center section of the country that you can't see out the side window :-).

Yes this, otherwise it's gonna cost $$$ for gas. I got 23mpg trailing a semi 300 miles

This is definitely on my bucket list along with Yosemite. Been to Colorado a bunch but have never made the last few miles. Sometimes I wish I lived on the other end of the country.

Nice!!! Yellowstone rules, I went out there in 2000 and again in 2001. Stayed in Billings MT and drove down to yellowstone. We made the trip from Mid-MI to Billings a couple times. Took us about 32 to 34 hours if I remember right.

I have problems w/my hips from a past leg injury, I use one of those thin foam hav'a'seats like for hunting and such. Not the heated ones, just a foam pad under my rear to help w/the bumps in the road on trips over a few hours.

A rubber hand to set on the dash waving might be nice. Thats a lot of jeeps to wave at from NY to Wyoming lol.

This may sound sacrilegious, but one of the best investments I made for my 94 2.5L 5 speed for those long trips was a cruise control. I rarely use it on the trail, around town, or daily driving, but on those long stretches on the open highway, it makes a lot of difference.

Driving with cruise on a manual transmission was a new experience and required some getting used to. I only added the brake disengage switch and not the clutch. So I have to be careful in those frequent times I end up downshifting… who says these 4-bangers can’t over-rev?

I bought the unit from www.TheCruiseControlStore.com. They do not actually have a model listed for the YJ 2.5L, but I called and they fixed me up with what I needed. I took my box of components to one of the installers listed on their home page... quite satisfied with the job they did. If you decide to add cruise, you might just call one of the installers... they may have the parts in stock and may give you a better deal since there is such a high demand for them.

I think I paid like $200 for the unit and paid $150 to have it professionally installed. I have driven from Dallas to Phoenix twice, Atlanta once, and spent 2 weeks cruising around Colorado, Utah and Montana last year.

Unless you are really good at drafting behind trucks for long periods of time, your gas mileage at highway speeds will probably stay in the mid to low teens. I am not good at drafting. I found that once I got to the area where I was going, by driving 35-45 mph on the back roads / non-interstate, mileage jumped up to 21-23 mpg… which is good given the price of 87 octane gas out west. Plus, the slower driving pace allowed me to see and enjoy things more - hey, I was on vacation...

Good luck on your trip! I'll be out that way with my jeep most of July.

Yellowstone

I live just outside the Adirondack Park near Boonville. I've done quite a bit of work on my 1992 YJ since I purchased it in 2009.
Recently I have just changed out all the body mounts, stabilizer shock, new shocks, all new u-joints, complete tune-up, new oil pump and pan, new starter, radiator, water pump, fuel pump and filter, new brakes and hoses all around, new serpentine belt, some fishplate work on the frame, front axle seals and new transfer case fluid front and rear just for starters.
I put some new tires on two weeks ago with a new spare as well foe my trip.
I have Micky Thompson 33's but I'm just going to ship those out. I've got about a buck 70 on it for miles but she runs like a top. Hopping for an uneventful trip to Montana, other than the awesome drive that it is!!! And just smashed my driver side sliding window yesterday some how; been looking for a replacement to no avail as of yet. Pain in the but. May have to throw in a piece of plexiglass for now. Not sure.

There's no parts jeeps on craigslist? You should look and see if you can find a window. Pick it up on your way. Bring some tools. You should bring tools anyways but bring tools and replace it right there.

I have both the slider windows and the zip-up soft top windows that I change out depending on my mood... sort of.

Last fall, when I went out through Colorado and Utah, I used the slider windows. It was cool in the morning where we needed the windows, but by noon, it had warmed up where we needed air moving through the jeep to cool things down (non-air conditioned jeep here...). So we would stop, pull the windows out and ride along sahara mode with the top on but no windows all around. It was warm enough driving down the road with the heater on wearing jackets with the slider windows installed.

This summer, I plan to take the zip-up windows. They are a little noisier than the sliders, but this way, we can open up the entire window without having to remove it from the door... might take them off anyway just because it looks impressive without the windows.

By the way, if you get the soft-top windows, never, ever let your passenger try to unzip them while you driving at highway speeds... you might be surprised how much suction the side draft has... I was.

wrong answer....never tailgate a big truck like that...1. you're gonna piss the trucker off 2. If he should blow a tire, and it happens frequently, you're going to be in serious trouble, possibly even fatal. That is the stupidest thing a driver can do around a semi other than pull out in front of it

That is the worst possible answer you could have given him. 1. it's going to piss the trucker off big time. 2. it's a very good way to get hit, possible fatally, by flying debris should he blow a tire, which happens frequently. That's the stupidest thing you can do around a big truck other than cutting him off or pulling out in front of him

My advice is keep going after seeing Yellowstone. You said West Yellowstone, so you're already probably in Idaho or close. Go to Sun Valley, then explore the 2 lane highways through all the mountains there, including 93, 75 and 21. Bring a fly rod is that's your thing too!
