help me please need as many jeep gurus as possible
ok so ill give a little background on the jeep.
i have an 89 wrangler islander. originally a 4.2 with a BA trans. PO butchered it by putting in a 4.0 in and slapping a carb on it from a 75 ford pickup. no sensors were hooked up. i dont even know how he got the thing to run. anyways that engine died and now im swapping everything over. im making it all 93. i found a 93 wrangler 4.0 with an auto.
currently the engine is mated with my AX-15 and in the 89. the entire harness is in, the computer below the washer fluid is in. and the one behind the glove box is installed. IT WILL NOT START. after some research i found that i needed a crank position sensor(CPS) to work with the AX-15. put that in today and still wont start. i thought it may have been my starter so i touched the post together and it cranked. just wont work from the key. now im reading that since the computer is programmed for auto that there is no way it will work with my current set up....... what do i do. please help me someone
Reason I ask is I swapped in an AX15 into my 88 and did away with the wire loom that connected into the transmission. Still had the harness coming from the trans but the harness it plugged into I tossed. We could not get the key to engage the starter. Acted like a neutral safety switch problem. Found the harness that plugged into it and plugged it in. Presto, engine fired and started. Look at that area.
no. if i turn it forward i can hear the fuel pump kick on behind me, the computer in the engine bay kinda whines a little and i can hear i believe 2 relays clicking in the fuse box under the hood but thats when i go to turn the key to the run position. but will not crank the starter.
i kinda had the same thought but have a problem there. the ax i have came from a 94 cherokee and has a 2 prong clip coming from it. the harness that i now have from the 93 has 4 ity bity prongs and is for an auto trans.
if it cranked and ran then you don't have any big problems...check your ignition switch to see if you have a wire that gets hot only when you turn the key all the way to start...if so then run that wire to your starter solenoid...your problem may be something as simple as the switch that says your tranny is in park
Ignition switch or wiring? i just had a problem with mine. If you can turn the key to the on position and fire up the engine by connecting the circuit between the two screws on the starter then that could be your problem. I just used a long screwdriver and touched it to the two screws and it would spark some and start the engine. it doesnt put out enough power to hurt you but just be careful of fire. i had to use this method for a couple of days and was fine.
well i just so happen to have a new ignition switch in the garage that i bought just in case a few months ago. ill take a look in that area. do i need to remove the column to install the new one. if so that sucks. i just put it back in. also just saw this. the column i have in it is my 89 one. it has a group of wires that go to the wiper delay, but there is a second clip that hangs down. (not sure what they are) anyways the clip that comes from the harness plugs right in however the harness has one extra wire that goes to nothing in the column clip. do these wires have anything to do with ignition or is that just the ones that go to the ignition switch?
thank you to anyone that jumps in on this help thread. its been parked for months now and need it back for the snow.
ok so i tried the new ignition switch and no luck. i also grabbed the steering column from the 93 thinking it might not be compatible and that didnt work either. im at a loss right now. my thoughts are clutch safety switch, neutral safety switch or just the computer all together. has anyone done this?
wait im confused. why wouldnt i hook up the one behind the dash.? i took almost every single electronic part of the 93 and put it in my 89. engine, the entire harness, both computers(behind glove box and also below brake booster), evap canister, fuse box under the hood, the entire dash and gauges, also the ducts for the heating(heater core and blower motor). the only things i left are the A/C system and ABS pump. the only thing that is still 89 is the steering column but i swapped that and tried a new ignition switch and it didnt change anything.
good to see you jumping in here BIG. ive seen a lot of your stuff and its been very helpful..
