Talking Hey guys, newbie here! Questions...

Hey guys,

I just came over to the Jeep side. I'm a recovering addict of all that is sports cars, high speed, tons of acceleration, awesome handling, and that's all also known as project vaccuum in my pocket. I realise this is probably just about as expensive if not the same but hey, it's fun!

I have some simple questions that I don't have time to "Search" for, I've gotta run, and we all know how annoying the Search feature can be, even when it's an advanced search. OK, first of all when I bought tires they'd be something like 275/30/18... width/profile/radius. I see people on here describing tires by inches. 31" tires, 33" tires, so on and so forth. Now MY GUESS is that that's the measurement from the ground to the top of the tire, is that correct?
I bought a 1995 Wrangler, here are some pics:



SO! Before I spend a ton of money I'd like to know if the Black Mountain bodylift is any good, the 2" lift one? I read up on that a bit and there's mostly good feedback. Will I be able to fit some bigger tires on there with a 2" lift? I'm guessing 31" tires would look good, if I'm using that incorrectly cut me some slack, I LITERALLY just got into this no more than 3 days ago.

Anyway! Alright guys I definitely can't wait to read up on the replies and stuff. By the way I'm in Miami, FL and always up for meeting new people so if there's anyone who knows of a club or some other place where I could go and inquire and chat about off roading or Wranglers in general a heads up would be greatly appreciated! yeah, jeeps get pretty expensive too... Welcome to the forum, and congrats on the new Jeep... I don't know very much about stuff, but I know a little... Yeah, it should be from edge to edge for the tire. the diameter. Just some tires are measured the way you are used to, or in inches, like 32"x11.5"R15, which means it's 32" tall, 11.5" wide, and a rim size of 15. Also, you can use a tire size calculator to calculate, something like this:

You would be able to run 31s with a 2" BL, but it might be kind of tight, especially when wheeling. I'm not too sure... have you looked at suspension lifts instead of just body lifts? I don't know anything about BL brands, so I couldnt tell you about Black Mountain.

just go with the shackles on the leaf spring they give you a good amount of lift for cheap then the soa lift i keep hearing about on here

Hey another Florida YJ Welcome to the site! Your leaf springs look pretty flat, you might want to look at a suspension lift instead. You will also improve the capability of your rig and not just the clearance.

Thanks guys for the quick replies. I'm trying not to dish out a ton of money as I just picked this thing up. What's a good suspension set-up that won't eat away at my wallet? Any websites you guys recommend that I can browse through? And last but not least... what's the width/profile/R15 of some decent mudding tires that will translate to 31"? I saw the Super Swamper SSR tires on some website for like $108/each, that's so utterly cheap, but what size would be 31" tires... I've no clue. Thanks again guys, hope to hear from ya soon!

If you need a lift, I'd combine both xxcheathamxx and crafty's replies. Go with new stock lefsprings and shackles. The leaf springs are about $80 each and a set of good lift shackles will run about $80-$90.

Personally, if this Jeep is a daily driver and will see light trails, I'd go with a more street-friendly tire. BF Goodrich All-Terrains are a good choice.

www.floridajeepers.net is a good Florida board to get local info. They also have a club section and I have seen a Miami based club on there.

but you could also pick up some beefer leaf springs at a pick a part or something i cant think of what truck or other non jeep vehicle has them that fit but there are some non jeep cars and truck that you can take leaf springs off of. just look around

hey and welcome. i scanned quickly didn't know if your tire question got answered, but you're right on tire size. i'd say skip body lift, shackles are a good cheap start. new leaf springs are a good idea, BUT, you always have one idea when you're new to this, and change completely when you get more experience. keep that in mind

anyway good lookin jeep, looks like fresh paint, i'd check for cover ups, and behind that diamond plate. just a thought, take it or leave it.

31x10.50R15 would be the tire size your looking for. Most of the tire sizes you find in the 4x4 community are not metric tires so they are measured differently.
The tire sizes are listed by Height x Width x Wheel Diameter, so a 38.5x16R15 is 38.5 inches tall, 16 inches wide and fits a 15 inch wheel. Thats all there is to it.

hahaha about the diamond plate i bought mine and took it off and saw the the whole corner was smashed in
made me sad to i used some bondo and fixed er' up

just slapped a D plate on it and called it good and that tail light goes out from time to time

Thanks so much guys all the info is really, really helpful! Especially you coyote, that's pretty much all my questions answered. I'll check behind the diamond plate when I get a chance, I've been really busy as of late with paramedic school/work... no time to play

I'm lovin' this forum already, very unlike the immature punks over at the 350Z forum.
Again, thanks for the welcomes and heads up and info! I'll keep checking back on this post I guess see if anyone else has any other info.

get the springs don't and i mean don't do the body lift. and don't do a shackle lift its just not worth the money. i would do some good springs and a set of boomerang shackles. just my suggestions, i would save you money and drive you jeep until you have lots of money to sink in to it. at least that is what i have experienced.

on a 15 in rim if u go above p265/75/r15 they switch to standard numbers u cant get a p285/75r15 but that would be equal to a 33in tire witch u can get. hers some quick changes

p265/75r15- 31in tire

p285/75r16- 33in tire

p31/75r16- 35in tire
