How does this even happen?

I took my MC2100 off and as I was wrenching some other stuff, I take a look at the MC2100 and find that one of the arms off of the base of the carb has completely rotted off.

How does this even happen?

Tighening it down to much would cause that.... most likely was cracked a long time ago and slowly the aluminum oxidized and work it's way through the crack..... The thicker and softer the base gasket, the easier it is to crack it if tightened to much.. always tighen in a criss cross pattern and evenly....
