how much would it cost to do an engine swap?

I plan on doing a engine swap. I currently have a 4 banger and thinking about putting a 4.6 liter inline six or a Chevy 350 small block. Any suggestions? Would I need to get a new tranny? Expected price? Thank you!

You will need a new trans. Even going to a Jeep 6 cylinder will require a transmission. You should be able to pick up a Jeep AX-15 for under $500. I have a Jeep 4.0L HO inline with all of the electronics that would almost bolt in... I'll let that go for $650... I have the power steering pump, box and reservoir that I will throw in for $100 (I think I have all of that for $200 on here). Also A/C that I have advertised for $325 or something... I would let you add that for $250. You may not need those, but I would offer them so that you could use the stock belt routing. I'll throw in an exhaust system and fuel tank with the in-tank pump you need for fuel injection (hard fuel lines, too) and a radiator... So, at that point it would cost you $1000 + trip expenses + transmission (+/-$400).

If you go with a small block chevy, you'll be looking at $500-$2000 for the engine, $300-$1500 for a transmission, $300+ for exhaust, $250-$500 for conversion kit (motor mounts, radiator, etc.) and probably another $300-$500 in incidentals... Trust me, there will be things that pop up like coolant tanks, fuel lines, motor mounts and hoses. Bottom line is that with a carb'd junkyard swap, you might get away for $1500. If you do it right and go crate engine and new components, you will likely drop $7k... plus labor if you don't do it yourself.

And there will be somebody that will chime in and tell you he swapped in a 350 for $13 and a 12 pack of beer... He isn't including everything.

Probably around $3500 when all is said and done. You will need the wiring harness for the engine, at least an AX15 transmission, the adapter plates, new mounts to weld onto the frame, and so on and so forth.

Just sayin... I have an NV4500 hooked up to a NP231 with an SYE and the driveshafts from my Wrangler, too. I could hook you up with all sorts of hard core toys.

^Junkyards will want more for those 4.0 engines. Probably around 1000 or so for a good one.
