I Need 2 Make A Quick Decision...

Im on my way to replace my motor w/ a 350 chvy sb, I have the block only right now... it needs everything, i aint skerd but i also was just offered a ford 351 out of a mustang set to race. for FREE! it has a blown rod...yippie. no biggie. long story short, father got pissed at son and im tryin to capitalize..heh heh. So my question is: I had everything mapped out for the chvy---bell housing adapter/ motor mounts, stuff like that. Can I get stuff like that for the ford? Do guys put ford engines in jeeps? my experience is in chvys but this is a pretty good engine I dont want to pass up for free. I can then use the money for further mods ya dig???

I'd keep the ford motor....but either way you go with this http://www.novak-adapt.com/
They got what you need for either swap. There are a few others too.

You say that the Ford motor is set up to race. That may not be desirable for a Jeep. And it is a Ford. (I don't like Fords...Can you tell?) Depending on how it was built you may just need to swap out the cam so it will work better in the Jeep. Aside from just not liking Fords, Chevy motors are cheaper to build than Fords. You might be able to unlkoad the ford motor for enough money to build the chevy and have money left over for the conversion stuff.

351s can be a little tricky, is it a cleveland, modified, or windsor?
In my opinion if it was a 302 I would think about it due to the great selection of parts but a 351 you are limited. Sell the 351 and use the money for the chevy.

What year mustang is it out of? You really want to stay away from the Cleveland engines. I've never heard or seen anything good bout the blocks they made with those.

Is it a 351W? The 351W is a great motor, and parts are readily available for them. If it's a 351C or 351M, Scotty is right - parts are not as plentiful.

The other nice thing about the Ford over the Chevy is the distrib is in the front of the engine. You don't need to worry about clearance issues with the distrib in the rear.

Are you sure the Ford engine ONLY has a "blown rod"? When you say blown rod - are you talking about a bent pushrod or thrown connecting rod? BIG DIFFERENCE!! I'll say it's impossible to throw a connecting rod and not damage anything else on the bottom.

Either way, check the whole engine for damage.

If it's a connecting rod: Better check the whole engine for damage. Thrown connecting rods wreak havoc on an engine.

If it's a pushrod, pay special attention to the valves, heads and the cylinders, camshaft, lifters (mostly top end, but check out the bottom end, as well).

These are the primary things you need to check. It's best to disassemble the engine and have it hot tanked and checked by a competent machine shop or engine builder. You may end up having to do a complete rebuild on the Ford engine anyway.

If it busted a rod, it is good for a boat anchor. You might save some of the parts, but it is gonna be expensive.

Take the free Ford. Sell the stuff that is usable. Throw the rest away and buy a Chevy.

its a windsor. and i am sure that i will have to machine out, and sleeve the scoring that took place when the CONNECTING rod blew. yes i like the up front dist. opposed to at the rear as well. I got the motor in my garage now. havent tore into it yet. although, it looks stock...nothing screams performance at me, so how "race" it is has yet to be seen.only wierd thing is...(i dont know if this is a ford thing or what) it has some kind of plastic carbon intake manifold and valve covers??? its feul injected which needs switched so i'll change the wierd mani. anyway. the motor is a '96.

Thought they quit using the ohv motors in 95

Also, the plastic intake sounds like a factory truck intake, you have been had if they said it was a race motor.

Let me get this straight...... You bought a Chrysler product ( Ifffffffy ) and now your considering adding a Ford motor ? Your sinking to new depths. My neighbor gave me a Jeep. I figure the least I can do is keep it all one brand.

If you can't stick with the brand... go the Chevrolet route..... or lock the hood and admit nothing. Can you tell I fly the Ford banner ?

yeah, this is taking a turn for the surreal...im tryin to track the guy down now. I got the motor from the shop i used to work at. it came out of a mustang not sure of the year. Its fuel injected, and has TWO (2) distributor "caps" at the front of the motor. they look electronic, not the typical cap and rotor deal centered at the forward area of the intake manifold. but these are mounted in front of the valve covers on both sides. I cant find a tag number on the block anywhere. What the h*ll kind of motor is this? I said '96 earlier because thats the only numbers i found anywhere on the motor. its definatly a ford, and definatly a v8... thats where im at. I was given this motor for free, If i can use it i would like to, if i cant i want to know. cuz its in my garage!

coil packs on front of motor? thats no 351w. if its from a 96 stang, its a 4.6. If you have a boat, theres your new anchor.

Ok... so its a learning process. YES this motor is a boat anchor. I want the damn thing off my engine stand and my block for a chevy motor back on. But i still need to figure out what this sh**ty thing is... I pulled the valve covers and the heads where stamped 05/12/99 280 made in mexico and there is two timing chains connected to the front of these heads. So its a ford (first mistake)v8 w/ twin coil packs timing chains off the front of both heads and feul injected... This experience has really humbled me, I should have never swayed from my earlier plan to use a chvy 350. This has resulted in even my WIFE telling me I can buy a new v8, but she has no idea on the cost, but i think that pretty funny. I want to list this on cregs list for free to get it out of my garage but dont know what it is. Im about to dismantle it and throw pieces of it in area dumpsters!!!lol im embarrassed to even look at it... GO AWAY!!!!!!!!

yep it was the 4.6...I already dismantled it and am taking it to the scrap yard first of the week...i'll never do that again. I should have never swayed from the 350 in the first place. the 350 block is back on the engine stand.
