I smell gas and I am losing MPGs

I have a 91 Jeep Wrangler Islander inline 6. I am getting about 11-13 miles to the gallon, the worst aspect is that when my windows are down I can smell fumes while driving. I don't seem to have any visable leaks in my fuel lines. I typically only smell the fumes while driving and a few seconds after I have stopped the vehicle. I am at wits end trying to figure out the cause...any suggestions?

Byron

You notice it from the front end or the back end?

When the jeep is running I smell it in the interior, when its stopped I smell it more toward the back of the vehicle but the smell is definitely fainter

Not windows-down weather yet I take it.

If the gas pump even splashes a little out the fill hole after fueling I smell that for 15 minutes...but not inside.

I think it's under the hood, but you dont see anything? You have a carb?

Yes, I do have carb. Any suggestions on how I could trouble shoot it?

Well, first off (and I'm eager for people smarter than me which is 99% of the board to correct me) all the times I smelt fuel in the cab it was from under the hood.

Can be as stupid as vapor lock. Can be as normal as flooding. Dude I just bought my Jeep and have been here a short time. You know how they say a bunch of women living together will all start their periods the same day and end the same day after a while. A jeep seems like it's no different. The weather changes a little and this whole board is lit up with fuel probs/questions including me.

If this is a Jeep thing I don't like it at all. Even my AMC J10 is afflicted this week.

Anyway. Eliminate the back by inspecting both lines (should be tightly clamped) on the fuel filter. FF is outside the tank on the driver's side rail. I don't know this. With a carb yours might be in engine bay?

If you have a carb you have emissions stuff like a cannister. A line from the tank runs to the can. Also quite simply the fuel line running into the carb (inspect visually).

Flooding is all gas all the time under the hood. Those are carb port settings that go out of whack on occasion.

What I really think is top manifolds/gasket or valves---I'd wrench everything on the top of engine down tight then see if you can still smell.

I had a fuel odor on my 89 4.2. I had no leaks but I found that the rubber fuel and vent lines at the fuel filter had cracks in them. Replaced all of the rubber lines by the filter and no odor.

If your mileage dropped that low I would suspect the carb. check the plugs and see if they are black or sooty.
