Smile I'm new, got my first jeep today!!!

Hello all, I got my very first jeep today. Always wanted one....and finally got one...lol. It's a 1990 2.5liter 5speed. White with a grey soft top. It's in fairly decent shape. It has a little rust around the windshield, but none in the floorboards. I have a couple pics of it. Enjoy, and PLEASE give me some advice on maintaining it properly. Is it supposed to run at like 200-210 degrees? Seems kinda hot. Can you put cooler thermostat in it, or will an electric fan make it run cooler? Doesn't overheat or anything though.....also the 4wd doesn't work right now. The guy I got it from told me the linkage just came loose under the jeep to the 4wd shifter. Tell me what you think!!!!! And any advice is appreciated. Thanks guys and girls. Oh yeah, I also wanted to ask what you think this jeep is worth??? I'm just trying to make sure I got a good deal...lol.

Welcome to the forums, you've come to the right place.
I'm new to the forums a week ago, but as for price, depending on the miles and w/ the 4-wd not working, and the 4 cyl I'd like to think it's worth 2-3 thousand. But that's probably the market around here... see what others say.
As for your thermastat I would feel comfortable w/ your temps 200-210, especially in the winter...
As for upkeep, I'd make sure your oils are full and up-to-date (engine oil, axle, coolant, etc.) Then drive it and have fun!
Looks like it's in great shape for a 90, makes my 91 look like blind mute w/ chop sticks, not good!
Congrats!
Jon

Thanks man. I have a buddy who's big in the 4 wheel drive thing, so he's gonna get my 4wd working right this weekend for me and show me where to check all my fluids. Just got it today, and so far, I LOVE IT. I'm scared to take the top off, cause I won't know how to put it back on...lol, plus it's kinda cold out, but I did take a little drive with the doors off and it was a blast. Can't wait to get my 4wd working right and take it out in the woods. I'm not really "new" to the 4 wheel drive thing, but this is my first jeep. I had a 91 toyota with a 3 inch lift and 33's and it was fun, but this jeep is way more fun already, and it's pretty much stock. Just 31" tires. I want a hardtop and full steel doors for it. The guy gave me the top thats on it(obviously..lol) and a bikini top with the cover for the back(makes it kinda look like a little truck). Probably gonna try and sell that to get some money to put towards the hardtop though. I can't wait til summer...lol.

Haha, yeah, they're the pictures the guy sent me that I bought it from. It was too dark out for me to take any pics myself. I'll take some better pics soon though. Apparantly, he doesn't know how to operate a camera...lol. Thanks for the welcomes guys. Most forums aren't very friendly. Everyone wants to ignore you and call you a newb until your post count is like 500...lol. I have a feeling this forum will become an addiction.

Welcome,Nice Jeep. There must be alot of rust free jeeps down in s.carolina. Pick up a manual they can be your best friend. Your 4wd not working could be a vacuum problem with the front end actuator or off the transfer case. Or probably the linkage as the seller told you. Worth, I would imagine $3000.00 to $3500.00. Up here(vermont) rust free jeeps such as that are hard to come by.

Great looking YJ bud. That white paint looks great. How many miles are on it? If I were you I would change those wheels, I've never liked that kind. Tires look pretty good though. Welcome to WF!

To maintain your top clean it take TuffStuff (its an apolstry cleaner) and a scrub brush and clean it on the jeep it will make it brighter. a good vacuuming once a month in the summer and prolly atleast every 2 weeks in the winter will keep the interior from going down hill, if you like your plastic windows dont let you little brother in it ( long story). lol any questions message me back WELCOME TO WF!

Thanks guys. It's got 136,000 on it. Hopefully gonna get that 4wd working this weekend. I'll keep you guys updated. As soon as the rain stops here, I'm gonna take some better pictures too. And yeah, I'm gonna try to find the mickey thompson bullet hole wheels like I had on my toyota. I'm not a big fan of those wheels either. Thanks for the tips on cleaning the top man, and I'll definately be picking up a haynes manual in the next few days too. Well, I'm off to the dmv before I go to work, so I can drive it legally...lol.

Congrats on your purchase and welcome to the addiction!

I have a white 93 YJ with the 2.5 4 banger and it has well over 200,000 miles on it. That's a good little engine you have there! That engine temp is where mine is all the time, so I wouldn't worry about it!

Have fun!

Welcome to the forum and one of the best experiences of your life! Looks good man! I think everyone has answered your questions. There is an electric fan conversion you can do to free up some hp.

Thanks guys, I drove it a good bit today. Temperature gauge seems to fluctuate a lot. From 200 to about 220(the line after 200). I'm gonna make sure it's got enough water in it, cause the guy that had it before me, obviously, wasn't one to work on his own cars. Might pour some water wetter or wetter water or whatever it's called in the radiator. It worked great on my turbo 300zx. Made it run about 20 degrees cooler. I'm used to honda's and they run anywhere from 165 to 185 so that gauge getting that high kinda scares me...lol. So far, I love driving it though.....if I could stop staring at the temp gauge...lol.

check the connector on the temp sensor. it's on top of cyl head all the way to the rear. if it is not properly secured it will cause fluctuations. i had to crimp mine to fit tighter. works fine now.

I dont know if yours has it but there was a connection under the battery tray in mine that I had to re do all the connectors and now my gauge works fine but before it ran like it was over heating, you could check that too

Thanks man, I'll check that out tonight after it cools down some. Theres some kind of hose coming off something that has a flat round thing on top of it. Looks like it's coming off the throttle body, maybe. It goes to something coming off the top of the valve cover closer to the firewall with a flat round thing with some kind of foam screen in it. What is that? I think mines broken. Looks like it used to be all one piece. Is this a pvc valve or some kind of breather? Also gonna add some water in the radiator if needed and check the overflow tank. Is there a lower temp thermostat I can use also? That high temp just kinda freaks me out...lol. I know american cars run higher temps than japanese cars, but 200-220 is just kinda high. Water boils at 212 degrees doesn't it?

Appreciate it man....I'll also check that out. I noticed that when I turn on the headlights, the temp gauge will jump up just a little too.....exactly when the lights turn on??? Weird???

Cool

Welcome! I am a new owner & member here too. I have a 94 YJ. First thing I did was changed the spark plugs, cap, rotor, and wires, changed the oil and the other fluids and you should be fine. I have 135k miles on the 4.0 v6 and it runs strong!
Hope you enjoy it!
Oh Yeah, get a repair manual, Jeeps are easy to repair.
Oh, the only way you will learn to take the top off, is to do it! It gets real fun when its all the way off and it starts to rain, you'll get the hang of it quick!!

Oh yeah, I'm not sure if I mentioned that the 4wd works wonderful. I called my buddy (who works on 4wd stuff all day) and had him check it out. He crawled under it and said it looked like everything was good and for me to try and put it in 4wd.....slid right in, no problem...lol. I didn't even try the 4wd before I had him check it out cause I didn't want to break anything further if it wasn't working right...lol. Works awesome though. We took it out in the woods and played for a little while after that... ... I'm gonna get him to help me put the bikini top on soon and see if I like it better. Seems like it would get warmer faster inside the jeep with less space to heat.

Yeah, the guy I got it from was a little younger, and he said his stepdad gave it to him. Guess he just didn't have the cahoonies to shift that joker in 4wd...lol. I DO!!...lol.
