Incorrect Paint Code?

Hello everyone, my younger brother and I are restoring a 1991 Wrangler Renegade. The paint is in decent shape but there are a couple spots we would like to touch up, but I cannot find the paint code. The only thing on the Jeep is the body tag and the second line reads...

APA PW6 QW6 T5XS ERH

From what I have found that is the code for a white color, but it is red with no indication of ever being repainted. I sent the VIN to Chrysler to get the build sheet, but I wanted to check on here and see if anyone had an idea of what color it could be. Thanks for your help!!!

VIN: 2J4FY69SIMJI22879

Im thinkin your 87' might be Malibu Yellow, but Im not sure. It matches up to an '89 but I can't find 87 yet.

This is where your code should be on the 1987

Here's a darn good site that may help you
Chrysler Jeep Paint Color Codes - Jeep Paint Cross-Reference

Hmm, maybe not.
I looked some and didn't find the 87 Jeep

That red tag is;

1987 Jeep CJ7 - "Located on the cowl under the master cylinder..."

Check there for your tag

I got the build sheet back from Chrysler and it said the car was painted:

PW6 Bright White
QW6S Bright White

I tried to look in areas that would indicate the car had been repainted, but I cannot find anything. I looked under the fenders, when we removed moldings and trim, the color was still red. I am going to try radiant fire and wee if it works.

If someone DID change the color of it, then they must have done a really good job.

Another thought, could the ID plates have been switched on it from another vehicle maybe, or the tub replaced?

Before you just go shooting a color on it, maybe you can take something down to your local automotive paint supplier and see if they can help you with the color or color code.
These days, they can match colors quite successfully. Pretty much like they do at Lowes or Home Depot.

Buying paint is expensive and RED is one of the most expensive AND hardest to match.

Best of luck to you! Post pics!! I wanna see!

good points, and yes, any good paint shop should be able to match the color. If it was repainted, you have no way to get a real paint code. What if is was chevy paint? Or ford? Or Rustoleum? There really is no way to tell unless they match it for you. Bring in a small part thats already the red that you want touch up paint for.

PPG uses a profit to check actual colors.,take the jeep to a PPG paint store and they can use the profit usually for free and color match it perfectly

Try scraping some paint of the vin plate itself. It may reveal if the tub has been replaced.
