I am installing new inner axle seals on my dana 30. The 1 question I have is - should I grease the new seal before pounding it in to place? And if so , what kind or grease should I use ? Thanks

Yes. On the seal part where the axle goes through.

Any wheel bearing grease will do.

It keep the axle from blurring the new seal.

It doesn't hurt to put a thin coat on the axle as well just to be sure it slides in without tearing it just try not tho pick up any of the crap that gets caught in the tubes.

Yes get all the RTV off and clean it with emery cloth. Also degrease it and put the RTV on the cover in a thin bead going on the inside of the bolt holes then put it on and let it set with over night or a few hours then fill it up. The torque is something like 22 ft-pds for the cover bolts (I'd double check that)

I'm not talking about the rtv at the cover but around where the inner axle seal goes! The orange ring in this picture...

Do not remove the orange ring - it seals the pumpkin to the tube. If you remove it, then you may have weeping/leakage through that joint.

The red coating on the outside of the new seal is also needed - do not remove it. Some people add more RTV on the outside of the new seal, but I have never needed it - that coating has worked well for me.

You don't really need it a lot of people just get the new ones and press them in without any sealant som say that it's best to get it out and reapply it to the outside edge (just for insurance). I would take it off and clean it up and not put any back on, just press it in with a little grease on the outside of the new seal. If you do put new sealant on it still clean off the old sealant, it will make the new seal hard to set and it could either deform the seal or let oil through again. Sorry about the mix up. The orange stuff is oil resistant RTV I think the blue kind is it but they may have made the other colors of it oil resistant too.

That sealant is pressed on with the axle tube so that shouldn't be the only thing sealing it's the excess from it being squeezed out. So if that is nicked it worn a little I'd leave it. I thought that it was on the seal surface (damn small screen)
