islander opinions ???

HI, I am now looking at an 89 Islander with auto and 127K. It is white with full and half doors, soft top, and new tires w/ a 4" lift. Looks nice and has no rust. Guy wants $3200 but thinking of offering $2800. It has the original islander graphics which I have kind of come to appreciate. I found replacement deacls for $150. Anyone have opinions on this edition? I think they look pretty nice and I like to try and keep things as original as possible. Good price? Thanks and all comments are appreciated!

The price is good, right where it should be. What makes it a great deal is both sets of doors and the lift. Here in FL I paid more for my 89 with out any doors and no lift :/

A few FACTS:
Rectangle headlights ARE kinda cool.
YJ does NOT stand for "Yuppie Jeep".
Jeeps should only have TWO doors.
You should ALWAYS wave at other JEEP drivers.

Agreed the doors are a plus and the price is a steal, even in sc where cars are cheap.

No rust!? Wow, if you can get it for $3k I'd say that's a good deal. Check the frame rails in the back near where the bumper attaches and check the body mounts. Other trouble spots are the floor pans and around the roll-bar mounts. If that's all solid, you found a gem. See if the guages work and exhaust is clear (no coolant burning). Some people view the Islander YJ as a grocery getter - but it's very capable and loads fun.

btw, where did you find the graphics package?

I love those graphics. Might retro fit to my tj? Hmm possibilities. Can you possibly tell me the hood dimensions to see if they line up?

The ones I got came WAY bigger than needed, and I trimmed them to fit, so I'm sure they would work on a TJ

I found a really nice graphic set from Phoenix Graphics and they are authorized by chrysler. I found another set on ebay for WAY cheap, but I am concerned with quality.. here is the ebay link

Jeep Wrangler Islander Graphics Kit CJ YJ Decal Stripes | eBay

Are the islander side steps pretty sturdy or just for looks?

I went and look at a 91 YJ base model today and had to pass on it. The guy had actually put tape over rust holes then spray painted over the tape thinking I wouldn't notice. Wow. Anyway, the Islander is looking better and better and I haven't even seen it yet. I am going to look at it Sunday and the guy says there is no rust and he checked all over the frame rails while I was on the phone with him. He said the seats need recovering but that is the way most are going to be.

This is the guy who did mine, and I am very happy with the way it all turned out, and they still look new a year after install even with one of the worst winters around here.

Only thing, the original graphics had a metallic look to them, and Phoenix does that for a whole lot more money, but Mike does not. I guess it is a very expensive vinyl.

The sidesteps, for me anyways, were useless. They are very slippery, no traction whatsoever. So, I got used to just throwing my leg over the rocker panel, until I lifted her. Then, off came the factory deal and on went the HighRock Slider steps from Bestop, and wish I had done this long ago.

But, if you wear a size 10 shoe and have a 30" waist and stand 6'4" barefoot and are still young and flexible, you'll be fine with the factory side steps.

I love love love my Islander. Personally think it's one of the nicer models they ever produced.

Also, as far ast the seats, I put in new Bestop seats and then covered them with Seat Glover covers to match the yellow. My old driver's seat had some pretty bad metal decay inside the frame, had to kinda bend it back forward every so often, until that became bending daily and propping up the back with a 2 foot chunk of 2x4

Has anyone ever seen or know of any production numbers for specific models within the jeep wrangler line? I am just curious as to how many Islanders, Renegades, Saharas were made each year.
