Keep or scrap the dana 30

Ok here is the question I want to run 36in TSLs with lockers! I have been looking at a scout2 axle swap but now I am looking at the Explorer 8.8. Can the Dana 30 hold up to the abuse or should i just scrap it?

The Dana 30 is the front axle, & has been shown to be reasonably strong. A 44 is better, & a 60 is even better yet, but most people don't wheel that hard, or often enough to justify the expense of a YJ front axle swap.

That said, the 36" tires & a locker up front would be a bit much for the D30 if you wheel hard.

The rear axle (Dana 35) is a different story. The 8.8 swap is a good one, a larger stronger rear is relatively cheap. If you find an axle from a 95 or newer Ford explorer. ( they went to independent suspension at some point.)

The 8.8 while better, is still a "C" clip axle, & a broken shaft can leave you stranded still.

A full floater like the Dana 60 is the best way to upgrade, the axle breaks, you remove the broken stub, & if you have a true locker, your on your way home.

Now the 8.8 is a good swap, to a stronger axle. Still a bit cheaper, than going to a D60, or a rear such as the Chevt 12 bolt.

no need to upgrade the dirty thirty bra..

but if you gunna be lockin it, then yea, throw some chromolly shafts in it, if you runnin open, it should be fine

as far as the rear, all you gotta know is the 8.8 is hands down the way ta go.
its easy, convenient, and stout.
trash that dana 35 right quick

does this answer yer Q?

btw, im guessin yer new '94 dont gots 4:10's like yer '95 had.
im also guessin since yer '95 was a 4.0, that you did the gear swap yerself..

so, like buckshot said, get that 8.8 from a '95 and up (4:10's and disks), then you can just swap yer 3:07's up front wit the 4:10s ta match the rear..

Yea, I still got the stock 3.07 gears but there is no way I would leave them in there. I dont want to spend a dime on the dana 35. I dont wheel that hard but I also dont want to spend a fortune and destroy it first time out. thanks for the help guys
