Kids & a dog in 92 YJ...considerations?

So I have my first Jeep: 92 YJ. Main intent is to go to nearby High Lakes camping, mild/mod 4x4. I have a 9 year old girl and an 11 year old boy. Back seat is aftermarket MasterCraft with high backs. One seat belt needs to be replaced. Other than that, I wonder if there is anything I need to think about in terms of comfort, safety, usability, accessories, etc geared towards kids riding back there. Anyone had some creative ideas? Obviously, the roof rack goes on next week so we can carry camping gear, etc. Maybe throw in how you handle taking your black lab along with you in a 2-door with 4 people ...thanks!

When we have 4 people Georgie rides in the back across both rear passengers. I have a great Petco clip for her harness for safety.

Can't imagine a lab sitting on two small kids for a length of time.
You can rig a dog crate onto any small trailer, the trailer would also provide additional storage.

Can't think of any other options because the dog doesn't have opposable thumbs.

But, you do!
Just stand on the running board, hang on and teach the dog how to drive!!
You'd be right there to yell at 'em if he does screw up.

Not sure if I would be comfortable putting my lab on it, but you could get a cargo carrier that goes in the receiver hitch and put a kennel on it. I got mine on sale at Home Depot for 49.99. It has 500 lb capacity.

If the dog will stay on the floor under the kids that may work. Just be sure to put a pad down since the floor can get hot above the cat. And of course remember the stock roll cage is minimal protection in a flop over, not much in a full roll so be careful.

That could work.

But don't try to run for President. Just ask Mitt Romney.

I think the cargo net is a good idea, new seat belts ordered. Might remove center console for room for dog. Family roll bar to be added next month. Will check back for more ideas. Would be interested in trailer ideas for OHV camping...not to sleep in but rather to haul gear...

I had a small trailer built by Carson, had them do spring over and larger tires for ground clearance. It had the regular ball so could not be run at extreme angles as could be done with a spindle, but it was fine on the trails into camping sites where I would leave it for off-roading. Check Craigslist for small trailers, going spring over is an easy swap if you find a solid base.

Depending on the size of the kids, it might be easier to put the smaller of the kids in the kennel and let the dog sit in the back.

JUST KIDDING!!!! The small trailer does look like a good idea for all your gear. I don't know if a lab would be happy sitting in the bouncy crate. :/
