Lets spend $300!!

OK guys and gals,

Heres the thing I am possibly the most indecisive person on the planet, this being said I currently have $300 to buy some parts for my jeep. I can't decide what to you so i thought i would get some input from you guys.

The Jeep 1993 YJ
2.5cyl
5spd
4inch black diamond susp.
33x12.5x15 cooper stt's
black rock steelies
flex lite efan
decent stainless exhaust (PO installed)

The options
rear body panels (both corners are rotted at bottom)
front flat fender kit (thumb size hole both sides)
front bumper/rear bumper
shocks
front locker
sound system
anything engine related...i should prob do full tuneup...now that i think of it
wind shield frame
frame repair materials
etc..

Pretty much anything that can be rusted is, i like the ride height but the jeeps
steering is shotty at best with a new stabilizer. The frame should be addressed rather soon and i just hate the look of rust... Anyway what are you thoughts im bored surfing the net for parts and wifey said its ok to spend 3 bills so lets here some input!

a yeah the michigan winters suck!!! ugh i hate rust...i am leaning towards body work and tune up i do believe. Where in MI are you located?

I'd personally go with Rear corrner gaurds first. They would Hide that rust and offer some more protection. If you went with Smitty built You would have Some cash left over. Maybe use it on some Rust primer and Some Stuff to cut out as much rust as possible before putting on the corrner gaurds. If thats not your thing... Then you can never go wrong with Bumper(s)

can't wheel it if it doesn't run right or breaks in half

Buy a can of rust inhibiting spray paint, some sand paper, and use as much of whats left to fix the worst to easiest safty issues, starting witht eh frame and steering.

Use the sand paper to sand and spray over the sanded rusty areas.

Cant run it anywhere if you have the potential to cause a wreck from falling parts...


To be frank, your in store for a frame off restoration IMO, before it gets worse or falls apart.

Buy a welder!! If you have one then fix the frame! I kept mine running good instead of fixing the frame now, the frame is cracked and motor runs alright! Can't drive it tho!

any $300 welder wont be good enough for frame repairs....

Get the KBS frame rust restore kit if too much of your frame isn't gone. If your frame still has strength get that for $100 and stop the rust dead in its tracks for at least 3-4 years. Well worth it. You can also do it without removing the body. Just unbolt the tub one side at a time and lift it off the frame to get where you need to. Be prepared to replace the body mount bolts as well. Check the decried for the KBS. That stuff is awesome.

Last good welder I had that was capable was a Millermatic Challenger 172, I sold it for 550 on Pirate.

You need a welder that will penetrate the metal, not just make a pretty bead, Gas and wire costs are enough to put you over the $300 mark (if new).

Your Jeep looks pretty familiar... Happen to be around the Howell/Fowlerville part of Michigan? But I say get that rust fixed. I need to get mine fixed so I can put on my plastic Rocker Guards and quarter guards on :/. Also a screw on my gas cap is stripped... no idea how I will get that out....

A Lincoln 225s has enough to weld the frame. You can pick them up all day on craigslist for under $300. I have welded some serious stuff with one. Built a fifth wheel trailer with one.

Yea, i guess you can use a stick welder, I just dont like having to stop, change the stick, or try to restart an old stick.
Mig is so much easier, and, like a monkey, i like it easier.

wow thanks for all the responses guys! The frame isnt to the point that it would warrant a frame off resto yet i believe it can still be saved i will just be reinforcing the shackle points and body monts for now. Also where do i get that KBS stuff? anyone else try it? ive never heard of it...but i do have a welder at my disposal. Yes the frame is the main concern and will be addressed first. Then the tune up and somewhere down the line hopefully soon i can repair the rust! But the frame will most likely eat up a majority of my cash in steel.

Nope only been to howell once couple years ago with out my wrangler. Im smack dab in the center of the mitten man, Mount Pleasant MI.

I have a Mig and a stick. Just my preference to stick when it comes to frames and stuff like that. I know what each bead is putting in. Not to mention They wouldn't let us use a Mig on the hulls of the submarines. It all had to be done with stick when we did repairs. So just habit for me.

Hey guys,
I have a jeep that was in new york for a few years and it's really rusted around the center body mounts. Would it be a good idea to just weld a sleeve around the rust holes and replace the mounts?
Any experience with that?

I would suggest you working on that steering issue. The scariest thing to happen in a Jeep is to have your steering all sloppy when your driving down the road. Who care what it looks like, make it safe and strong.
