Looking for a YJ

We just traded our 2011 JK, now Im looking for a used YJ.

I bought a new YJ in 1987, it was 11k OTD.

Im looking for a 93-95, anything I should be looking for before I buy?

I want to spend 5-6k and there are alot in that price range.

Rust.. look carefully at mounts and cross member in front of the gas tank. also the skid plate should have some clearance between it and the trans. look at the fuel cell skid plate as well.

You should have no problem finding a good yj for that price. Biggest thing is rust, get a 4.0, you wont regret it. research the different models, get the model you want so you don't have to search for factory parts. try and get 1 with a factory hard top, even if you don't think you'll need it now it will be wired if you do need it. it's much easier to go from a hard top to a soft top than the reverse. make sure 4 wheel drive works.

why not a 92?

I agree with the above posts. 4x4 in working condition, factory hard top, and watch for rust. Especially by the rear shackles on the frame. Reach your hand between the gas tank and the frame and feel around the shackles. Check the rocker panels as well and the cross member in front of the fuel tank as mentioned above.

Just sold my 92' 4.0. Make sure you get the 4.0! It's a helluva motor.

Grab a 95 if you can. You can get lucky and get the D30 with larger 760 u-joints (early 95 used the smaller joints, but changed mid-production). Less rust prone than previous year models. Some even used the larger style TJ tailgate hinges. The 95 was the best YJ built.

Even if its a 95 don't skimp on the rust inspection, while they might be more resistant, rust has more to do with care. I've seen 95's with rusted out frames while my 93 is spotless

x2^

Owner maintenance is key. The 95 is less rust prone, but if neglected even a Ferrari will turn to a heap of rust.
