Im thinking about having my Jeep's paint rejuvenated in the next year. Has anyone had this done at Macco and what was the cost? Mine will need light bodywork and I'd like to keep the current color and have it clear coated. Just wondering how much money I should start putting back for it.
So I used them here in Charlotte nc to change my jeep from stock green to fire engine red with light body work and I primed it and sanded it before they got it and they sucked horribly tried to give it to me with the paint peeling off the windshield I had missed a spot under the windshield wipers .
Made them redo t they then repainted with out taping or cleaning the hood and painted dust and dirt into the hood.
Said it would take three days I got it back two and a half weeks later.
They suck horribly in Charlotte NC
Check local reviews and better business bureau before you take it.
Lastly cost was 1100.00
I say buy your own gun and paint yourself
Worst place ever to paint your jeep, or any car for that matter. Go there if you want your windows and headlights painted as well.
On a serious note, just go to a real body shop. Macco is basically the mcdonalds of body shops.
Ok. I'm based in Raleigh NC so I will read some reviews and shop around. For 1100 I can probably get a local business that will do a better job anyway.
Well, unless the labor is cheap in NC, I doubt that you will get a local business to paint the entire outside in base/clear for $1100.
If the rates are anywhere near what they are up here in PA. Then you are looking at between $3,000-$4,000 for a total exterior paint job. Specially if they have to do the body work on it.
I had the exterior of a Ford F-350 done about 10 years ago, it didn't need any body work, just sanded and sprayed and it was $4500 back then. I have my own spray gun as a result of that paint job. Granted that it has more body surface than a YJ, but the cost of materials have gone up since then as well.
If you can get it done for $1100, and it isn't a maaco masterpiece, then you better jump on it.
Yeah you are probably right...in the city it will be quite expensive for a good paint job...but I have family in western NC and the prices out there are sometimes up to 50% cheaper. That might be my best option...a small town bodyshop while out visiting family. Driving 250 miles to get it done is still cheaper than what it would cost in Raleigh.
It sucks but that's the whole point of getting feedback. I don't want to spend a lot but I don't want a shitty paint job either. Doesn't have to be perfect but I don't want my chrome accents, windows and headlights getting ruined.
Wait I might I swapped my front axle out for a DANA 44 so I doubt my original front drive shaft will work I have be driving around with out it because I have not regeared the front yet
Probably not. Except for wheels, tires and lift my jeep is stock. I pulled the shaft out to change the u joints...found out it was badly worn and decided not to waste $40 in u joints on a shaft that needs replaced. So I'm searching for one for a stock 87 YJ.
The offroading I'll be doing will be mild, no rocks or crazy mud. I'm considering a regear or an axle swap. My tires are pushing the size limit for the stock D35 and I suffer such a power loss in 5th gear on the hwy that I don't even bother putting it in 5th anymore.
Hey man don't be fooled out of a good paint job by macco! They did a fantastic job on my jeep. Color was pr4 red an they also use Sherwin Williams auto paint. Not to mention a 5 year warranty. Mind you I did all the prep so all that was needed was primer an paint. Cost was right at 1000$ for base coat clear. Call around the dealerships an auto body shops an ask which location is the best. They'll know
I only seen one macco paint job and it was a joke. My buddy spent 2 days marking his truck up with a grease pen. The entire truck was one circle on top of another.
The used car lot I worked for sent a bunch of cars to Maaco and we got some really nice jobs from there. They have also painted 2 of my personal cars also very good jobs for the money. If you sent a car that was supposed to be prepped there and paint peeled it wasn't sanded properly. That is on you. Applying paint isn't a mystery I personally have painted hundreds of cars and have prepped hundreds mores for other shops to paint and never had adhesion problems. Prep is the biggest part of a good paint job if the paint comes out smooth and evenly coated and shiny the painter did his part. I no longer paint cars due to the damage it did to my lungs that is why I do the prep and send them out.
I'll have to think about it and read some reviews. I don't care about a mint condition paint job. I just want new clean paint without fade or peeling. I don't think sanding and priming are items that I'm equipped or motivated to deal with. Maybe I can forgo the extra clear coat. I'll just have to ask around.
I went to my local paint shop which does really nice work. The owner who I have done lots of business with told me for his shop to do it would be about $4000. I told him I wanted a nice job, but it's a jeep so I'm not looking for show car quality. He gave me the name if a guy who did it for $1800, it looks great! Ask someone in a high price shops if they know someone who does decent work for cheap, if they are good guys they won't mind giving you a lead for work they won't do.
I used the Maaco on Atlantic Ave several years ago and they gave me back the car, Honda accord, and it was done fairly decently. It had some fish-eye on one of the fenders and the front bumper had peeled off from the wind within 6 months. That's my only experience with them. I'd go out west in a heartbeat, lol. Good luck man!
I'm going to take my jeep into a Macco here in Richmond this spring. The Macco I've gone to usually runs a Spring and Fall special and you can get some good deals. I have an old Mercedes Benz wagon that I had painted there last fall and they did a fantastic job, $350 total after some negotiations. The job was done well and the paint looks great and they color-matched the factory paint. My wrangler is already painted a green that is not original so getting it freshened up at Macco seems like a better deal than paying a good body shop $1000-2000 to paint a wrangler. All that said, if I needed anything more than a re-spray I would for sure NOT take my car to any Macco.
I do know that ownership of the franchise makes a big difference, some take more pride in their work and customer satisfaction than others. Like others, check for reviews and if one gets good reviews I wouldn't have an issue.
Sounds like the quality of the Macco paint job comes down to the person doing the work. The good guy who cares about his workmanship or has more experience does a great job. The new hire guy just starting out does a bad job or doesnt care does a bad job.
If you go maybe try asking to met the person that will be doing the work to discuss his skill set and experience or your expectation. Putting yourself at a more personal level with an employee can give you an advantage at times. They will care more if you not just another vehicle or work order.
Before you commit to have a car painted anywhere take a minute and look at the completed cars in the parking lot. If you see a bunch of bad jobs then find another shop , if you like what you see then ask them for a quote on your vehicle.
Many years ago I had them paint a work van for me. I wasn't looking for a bang up job, just something nice and clean. I got estimates from two different Maaco shops and one independent guy. The local guy was a lot more money. No body work was needed and it was going to be the same color, black. I went with Maaco. The funny thing was I asked for them to shoot just the body and not the roof thinking I'd save some money. The Maaco shop I went with insisted I shoot the roof as well.
The job came out fantastic, it still looked good 10 years later when I sold it. You have to ask a lot of questions and look at their work. If it wasn't a work van and I wanted a great job I would have gone with the independent guy and ponied up about $4,500. I paid $550 out the door.
another option is to ask around to find a "hobby painter" who has a set up in his garage or barn. If the guy gets all his work word of mouth he probably does a decent job at a fair price.
