Might be buying a 1990!

Hey All,

I found this nice 1990. Been mostly restored.

My only concern is that it is a 4 cylinder, which I assume to be:
AMC straight-4 engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

How under powered is this going to be? Can it do highway speeds?

Also the engine and transmission has not been restored. He claims it runs well and doesn't leak oil or anything, how can that be possible? Should I assume that I will need to rebuild or replace both?

Thanks,
Adam.

I just bought a 1990 4 cly. It will do highway speeds on flat ground and on some small hills. Shifting into 4th takes it right over the top. Mine leaks some but not enough for me to worry about right now. Ran 60-65, sometimes 70, from east Texas to the Arkansas state line where speed limits are 55. From there up to western Arkansas I ran 55-60.

The 4 banger is no speed demon. It will do highway speed, just takes a while to get there. You will have to shift down for even the slightest uphill grade. Around town, 5th is pretty much useless. You'll get used to it.

I guess I don't care that much about the power. What are my options for replacing/rebuilding? If the engine blows up or transmissions drops out, are there options to replace?

I am so pumped for this vehicle, I almost don't care about your answers haha. I would just like the peace of mind that if it dies, I can bring it back to life

Lots of options. 4.0, SBC, rebuild 4 banger, diesel swap.

Anything I should be on the look out for on a 1990? Sounds? Issues I should know about? Things I should test?

Rust. Under the carpets, the frame at the rear shackles, and above the wheels are the most rust prone areas.

What about emissions tests, safety, and insurance?

Emissions: will I have trouble passing? simple fixes?
Safety: It has doors, gas caps, tires, roll bar, what more do they want?
Insurance: Super old car with money in it in mods, with no safety features?

Thanks!

No inspections where I live in Arkansas. But a trooper can inspect your vehicle out on the road iffin he wants too.

Do you guys drive it in the winter? Should I expect defrost and heat to not work? Snow to blow in? Engine to not start (in the cold)

Test the heat and defrost when you see it. Put a battery in when/if you buy it if you are so worried. It's no different than buying any other vehicle. If you are not that technical when it comes to automobiles, have someone you trust go with to scope it out.

Reality check: You are looking a 24 year old vehicle. TWENTY FOUR YEARS OLD. In some states this qualifies as an antique vehicle. Keep that in mind when considering how much life the various components/parts have left.

Reliability is dependent on how well the vehicle was maintained by previous owners, and how much it was punished. Regardless, even a well maintained vehicle ages and parts will begin to fail simply due to age. Check everything over. Look underneath, check all electronics, drive the vehicle.

Be aware of body and frame rust when scoping out these older Jeeps. Be sure to check the footwells for signs of rust. Easily overlooked if there is carpeting or floor mats.

Yeah be very careful looking at it. I just bought my 91 a month ago. I drove it an hour back to my father in laws, he looked at it and found nothing wrong. Drive from Phoenix to San Diego (6 hours) and halfway it throws a rod. Then I replace the engine and rip out the carpet and find a nice rust hole. I looked underneath but not well enough so do not be in a rush, check it over real good. I paid $4000 for mine.
