Mudding yesterday, won't start today, DOH!

ok, I've had this little problem every so often since last year, never thought much of it. When I turn the key, the starter would click. (either the starter or selenoid) dont know which, but she clicks and clicks loud at the starter. Whenever it would do this, it would only do it once then fire right up on the next try, thats why I never thought much about it...

Then, after some extreme mudding yesterday, she just clicks. I went out and tapped the starter 4-5 times last night with a rubber hammer and whalla! she fired right up again...

This morning, no luck, not even tappy tap tappin' it. So, I plan to clean it all up good, test my connections and hope that maybe its just rocks, dirt or water.

Anyone else have this same problem and know of a fix? I read a lot that says replace or rebuild the starter when it randomly does this, but this isn't random. I went through a couple feet of mud and the sh!t was flying everywhere (yeah it was a blast!) and now she won't turn over, just a click.

Thanks guys & gals!

I had to replace my starter after some mudding . . . mine didn't click, but instead made an aweful grinding noise. Luckily I was still under warranty and cleaned the Jeep up real good before taking it in and they covered it for me. Now that I think back, Jeep took pretty good care of me during the factory warranty period, lift and all.

It will usually click for several reasons, one is poor connection at the battery. Others are of course bad connections at the starter or bad solenoid or bad spot on the armature.

Can't overlook the obvious, I got home tonight and started poking around... I tried it about ten times and it kicked over. Tells me a couple things, for one, my battery was not low by any means... and, it was'nt locked up in the flywheel.

I got out with a flashlight and reached in to pull on the cables at the battery, all were tight. Down to the starter, the cable was loose. Totally moved 45 degrees... Tighten up the nut and away she went... Started it up five times every couple minutes just to be sure.

Back to work tomorrow for the jeep!

OMG, I'm a little behind on my reply

This was back then, the time I knocked the starter cable loose from mudding. Its been quite awhile now without any problems. A loose cable at the starter side will cause a bad day in a hurry when it just clicks and you loose all power.

Here she is "pre-lift"

nice find on the starter wire, just something to check next time you have the hood open, id take the distributor cap off and see if theres any mud in there, mine was running fine and i went to change the cap plugs and wires for some routine maintenance and there was no joke an inch of mud inside the cap

indeed...

and scgeek, thats crazy about the mud in there. I can only imagine how much was all over under the hood

I changed mine out a few months back w/new wires as well. Once it was all together I sprayed it all with silicone spray to help keep the moisture out. Reminds me... before mud season I need to spray all my electrical connections again.

Welcome to the forum!

Did you check/clean your battery connections good? If not, pull 'em off and clean 'em, scuff up the lead and crank 'em back down.

And yes, the water could very well do that. I would not ever shut it down in/right after going through water. Look at the starter now that it is dry and see if there is mud/water marks on it. Water is a good conductor, it would send the 12v right to ground rather than into the selinoid.

hehe... I was still a newb back then Now that my tires are wider than my flares and I got a couple years in, trust me - I know what your talking about! Just from one trip mudding in my friends back 40 after a storm I had chunks on the hood/roof/flares any flat surface! It was awesome my first time rolling out onto the road and hammering it. OMG MUDSTORM! There was mud flinging off the tires like 20-30 feet in the air! Holy crap it was cool. I wanna do it again... hold up, I'll be back in about 20 minutes I ended up getting a power washer last summer, we usually bog every other weekend throughout the summer here in MI. I found pulling two side tires up on ramps makes it nice for cleaning. Nothing profesional yet, just good ol' fashion dirt flinging. My buddy's got a shallow Michigan basement and it fills w/water all the time. We pump it out into the mud run... its a blast. Couple nice corners, some hilly areas and a real deep spot you can go through from a couple ways like a big X in the middle of the property.

MUDDING is where you leave the house with a red jeep and you come home with a brown one
