My 1989 yj

Hi, new to the forum and just bought a 1989 yj no rust runs of says 170k but it was pulled behind a rv by a older couple so it's not beat up or anything and motor only has 70k on it says the owner, but it has auto and I rather have a Manuel in it so my question is how much would be a ballpark number and any tips are welcome

Humm. Well I'd look at a junk yard and buy a transmission and bell housing. Get a new clutch, slave, and master. As far as the computer I don't know since I have a 5 speed. Congrats on the new purchase!

No prices, I love my A/T, on an 89 the computer should not be a problem, no elec. overdrive or anything elect. on the tranny that I know of. Should be a clean swap.

May be find a wreck for a Donner, make sure you get the newer AX5, 5speed, not a tranny from an 89 [BA10] they weren't very good.

89 should be a 4.2..91 was first year for the 4.0 in a yj as far as I know..In my opinion the auto is a much better tranny than any of the yj manuals

Yepp. First year was was 91 for the 4.0. And all those 4.0s are HO. As for the transmissions. I have the ax15 in My 92. I love 5 speeds. But yj manuals definitely aren't the best or most reliable. If your lookin for durability I'd stick with your auto. If just want a manual definitely go for it. 5 speed Wrangler just feels right haha

Itll cost you around 600-750 for tranny. Another 50-100 for bell housing and about 120-150 for the clutch slave master set. Make sure you get the bell housing for a closed system and get the closed clutch cylinder set, lots less work once its installed!! You got the same jeep i do except mine came manual. And yes you do want the AX15

Sorry, I must have missed a key, AX 15, not an AX 5.

Clutch and break pedal, on my 90 auto it has the long break pedal.
If you want in to look OEM you'll need a steering column also and maybe a few more things.

Run an add in the wanted section, I would really think some one will trade you out and Smile.
