Do you see any foam on your oil dip stick? --Have you looked underneath, while it is running to spot any potential leaks. Are the hoses soft enough to squeeze by hand? Does it run out of coolant, or run hot with plenty of coolant? With the radiator cap off, and the engine warmed up to operating temp, do you see motion, circulation in the tank? --Locating the exact problem, is often much harder than fixing it.

water pump, fan clutch, burp the system and see if there is any air, check to make sure the rad cap is releasing pressure. i would do the water pump. i had the over heating problem when i first got my yj, but i have a 96 xj 4.0. i changed out my pump. it did the job. also, what is the ambient temp of the air?

Its circulating fine. Also its not to hot if the heater is on if the heater gets cut off it gets extreamly hot. My mechanic is worried its the header or the header gaskit. Thanks for all the suggestions.
Im not really sure why they say roted out they cleaned it out real good is how i whould put it.

If using the heater brings the temp down I would definately replace the radiator. No matter how much you think it's cleaned out, it's still probably clogged enough to cause your problem. Change out the radiator before you deal with the headache of anything else. This assumes that there is no anti-freeze in your oil, or any other leaks, a new thermostat, radiator cap, and the water pump is functioning properly. The system has to be "burped". They used to "boil out" radiators 20-30 yrs ago. You're better off replacing it.

With my bad luck, it is always the worse thing that happens. Leaky head gasket, or warped head, is not what we want to hear. Look for any trace of water in yer oil. And good luck. I hope it is something simple.

MAke sure you do not have bubbles in your radiator when you are running it with cap off. I don't mean tiny bubbles. If you have good size bubbles then you have compression blowing into your cooling system. (head gasket/ cracked head) Just my two cents.

I think he meant rodded out the radiator. take the top section off the radiator and run a rod down the cooling tubes to remove scale buildup and rust funk, then weld the cap back on.

4.2L's are supposed to run between 195* & 210*.
If it's hotter than 210* & you can't think of anything else then consider this;
Bucky's "engine runs hot" fix.
