My "new to me" freshly painted black wheels thread

So i broke down and I'm gave it a shot. Went with VHT Roll cage/frame flat black paint and duplicolor clear coat and it came out great. 2x cans were $10 each and the clear was $8, so not a bad deal. 3 coats on the wheels and 1 clear coat

I've been toying with the idea of doing it and my rims were in desperate need of a cleaning. Figured I'm going to have to polish and clean them up any way if they don't come out right I'm going to be dumping a lot of time into them anyway. I'm stoked the came out like they did.

That looks great. I've also heard good things about Valspar tractor paint. I finally got a set of five that match, so I've been looking into doing this as well. Nice job.

Let us know how the paint holds up. I've always been weary of anything less than a powdercoat on rims.

But even if you have to paint it every couple of years I figure you still come out ahead.

The paint was awesome. I've used rustoleum and duplicolor, by far this paint was easier to use. How durable it is we shall see about. I'll try to post some better pics today after a night of setting.

Dude i'm no painter, i wish i could take the credit for that. The paint was "me" proof. I went into this with a set of rims I saw on craigslist for standby....ha

So final coat on the rims and respray'd the belly with some duplicolor bed liner and put my wrangler forum.com stickers on the top of the rear fender I just wish i would've washed the tires prior to doing it cause they are filthy..

Looks great! Makes me want to go ahead and paint my Canyon rims. Are your rims aluminum or steel? Also, did you take your wheels/rims off or just leave them on?

I left them on and used a deck of cards as a block. They fit perfectly in between the rim and the Tire. There is another thread talking about doing that. I'm not sure if the rims are steel or aluminum, they were on the jeep when i bought it.

I took a wire wheel and scuffed/cleaned them up. Then washed them dish soap and water. Made sure they were dry and sprayed the first coat. I waited about 5 mins between each coat. Did 3 coats yesterday and it sat over night. Got up this morning and pulled it back out into the sun and did one last coat for good measure.

Ah... Well I may have to give this a shot. I've seen people do a spray rubberized coating on the rims... and spray on bedliner. But this looks like a good idea too. My Canyon's clear coat is going bad and peeling.

Thats what mine were doing, I used the wire wheel on my drill to get rid of the peeling clear coat. Bedliner or rubber coat i just think that it could possibly throw the rims off balance, i'm not sure

Yeah. Bedlining sounded fine. Rubber Coat... not so much, but this way sounds best. But I may go with a flat black... How shiny are your rims exactly?

Not shiny really. I used flat black, but with the clear coat it glazed a little but its still flat
