Name that axle

I'm trying to figure out what this Dana 44 housing came from.

Overall width is about 1/8" wider than a YJ Dana 35
Pinion is about 2" from being centered
I had some axles that came with it. Driver side axle was 28 1/4", passenger side axle was 31 1/2". They were 5 on 5 I think. They were in the way so I pitched them.

The tube flanges have this 6 bolt arrangement that seems to be on a lot of heavier truck applications. Even the brake backing plates are pretty hefty. They're about 12" in diameter if I recall right.

I got some numbers off the housing. The axle tube had some numbers but I couldn't really make them out. Looks like there's an ...8C 9A in a couple spots. There's more before that which I can't read. I'll have to take some paint off and see if I can make it more legible.

?..8C 9A

As for the housing:

I gave it a go with some acetone, and the numbers didn't come out much clearer. The number punch when this was made was really weak.

I see "009 NC 04" (date?) and about an inch over "...88079A" (BOM?). So what I thought was a "C" is a "0"... I can't tell if there are any numbers before 009, but it looks like there might be a couple digits before 880, but they are so faint, I could only guess. This pair of numbers shows up in a couple spots on the passenger side axle, and upside down at that. Both set of numbers are really hard to read beyond what I've posted.

I haven't been able to find anything on the numbers. My guess is the tubes are a custom length. The housing is otherwise brand-new, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't a production unit. It may be sized to fit a specific application, but I'm not sure what else to look at.

Have you tried a wire wheel on a drill? Clean all the paint off and the numbers might be clearer. Good Luck, L.M.

Yes, it's down the bare metal. Someone/thing did a really crap job stamping the numbers.

I still haven't had a chance to go back with a piece of chalk. I used a paint pen, but it's so shallow that when I go to wipe the surface paint off, it takes all the paint that went into the numbers as well.
