I'm looking at buying my first jeep, its a 87 yj w/ a 4.2. looks nice, and the lady says theres nothing wrong with the body or interior or the motor. The problem- it has 169000 miles on it. My question is how reliable is the jeep motor. She says everything on the motor is brand new and it is maintained regularly. IF it is im wondering if i can at least hope to get another 15000 or ? out of a well maintained jeep motor b4 it needs to be rebuilt. any advise? Im going to go look at it at 6 tonight. Thanks, Oh heres the link to it http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/car/357736996.html
If your looking at craigslists, I would make sure to go over it very well, and run its vin# (should do that anyway). If its been taken care of Iv heard of jeeps engines lasting well past 100K miles.
yeah that mileage is my only concern right now, "if" the motor will last closer to 200000 if its been taken care of. Im trying to get a hold of a lady selling a 93 w/ 132000 thats really clean (same price)but needs a new front fender and grill, not much damage at all, but its a ferry ride away, so im kinda leaning towards the high mileage one.
look at the frame very well. look by where the spring mount in back i think they usaully rust there. also around the bump stops they mold moister in and make rust.
is the 93 a 4.0? newer is better..fuel inj..if it's a manual, the ax15 is better than the pugoet..a fender and grill are cheap..olympic 4x4 in snohomish has em..
I agree with Fly, if the 93 has the 4.0 it is a much better buy for the same money. especially if you plan on upgrading things later. The 4.0 has fuel injection, the 87 has the crappy carter carb which never work well. You will need at least a couple hundred bucks to put a decent carb on there or over a grand for fuel injection. The 93 has an NP231 transfer case which has a bunch of upgrade options for later. The 87 has the NP207 which has none. Many people find the 87 the least desireable YJ.
