Unhappy New Engine

Ok, so my little buddy is ill. My 90 YJ 258 block will be replaced in about a month or so. It only has 108000 on it but it has issues. Took it to numerous engine shops and they can't figure out what the noise is specifically. It rattles under load. They said it may be the timing chain, or a piston ring. It sounds awful and is somewhat embarrassing. It is also running very rough, miss firing. I had tuned up, new plugs, wires, vacuum hoses, distributor cap etc., still sucks. I'm getting about 13 mpg and have to put 93 in because if I don't it knocks. I was also told that I should change my carb when I get the new block, I’m thinking though of getting the fuel injection conversion kit from Quadratec. Got a price estimate for the new block for around $3000 installed, and the conversion kit is around $1169.00 plus installation. Need some feedback on what I’m about to do....

Okay so where talking 4k. Go get thy self a new engine 4.0L figure about $1500-1900(car-part.com) with low miles..more power, has fuel injection already. You will need a new computer/ emmsion stuff.. but It think you will be better in the long run. Not sure which carb you have, but if its the same one as the CJ 258 its the carter...and it has some fuel pick up tubes that get clogged with crap... remove and clean and see if that helps. Or sell the jeep as it is.. take the 4k and buy something newer.

I agree with 4Jeepn, that there are other options. But if you do just want to keep your rig and repower it you will not be disapointed with Mopar fuel injection. I have a friend that has a YJ with that FI kit and that thing turns and burns. The 4.2 can be a good engine and if you make that mod then it will be a completely different experience for you. Also why don't you check with your mechanic or parts places and see if you can pick up another 4.2 that can be swapped in and then put your MPI on. That seems like it would be whole lot cheaper IMO.

$4k is a lot of love for the engine. I'd look at any other option. Swap a used one in for a couple hundred and the hell with the gas mileage. You gotta put a lot of miles on at 16-18 mpg to make up $4k. Have yours rebuilt with a hotter cam, intake, headers, and a Weber carb for maybe $2500. Get the low mileage fuel injected one as suggested and fight through the wiring headache.

I actually just got the yj in August for $2,500. After getting it, i bought new seats, a new top, a console, new rims, new 30.9 wranglers, got the tranny rebuilt, new clutch. I'm in totally about $7,000 now. Theres no way i'm givin it up. I intend to keep it, i might even be asked to be buried in it :-). I can get a block much cheaper but i want to go with a reputable shop with a 36000 mile warranty. The new atk block is about $1795 plus installation. So if try getting a new engine that has fi already, like 4jeepn is suggesting, what year engine do i search for?

Having dumped a ton of money into my 258 I can relate to what you are looking at. With the feul injection, all ignition pieces, header and exhaust, I have spent a bunch. Now It runs as better that it was ever meant to drive from the factory, but for all of that money I could have dropped in a 300HP small block Chevy. If I had it to do all over, I wouldn't spend a dime on the 258. Don't get me wrong, I love the way my jeep runs now, but just imagine what that small block would do. Just my $.02.

I would put a call into or visit the website of http://www.advanceadapters.com/ they should be able to point you in the correct direction as for the newer engine to trany and what swap will work best and what parts you may need... I would think a 92 or newer should work.

Personaly I would do a compression test on the current engine first. If that proves the engine is in reasonable mechanical condition, I would not replace the engine. I have heard more knocking 258 than non knocking ones, but those engines run for a long time. I would do the Howell fuel injection kit first. After all, if the egnine does come apart you can transfer everything over to the next engine. That stock carburetor is the father of all driveability problems, and the vacuum line spaghetti under the hood must be perfectly sealed and no cracks, along with all the electrical emission stuff working. My $.02

'93 YJ, 2.5, 5 spd, shackle lift, 31" Boggers, 4.88, Lock Right ina rear, True Track ina front, known as "Lenny." Built by the five handed monkey that lives under the stairs, with lots of used parts

When your Jeep is lifted, generaly, it will NOT drive like it used to.
