new guy with a YJ

Hi everybody!

New visitor here, I just found your site. I've wanted a Wrangler since I was in high school and now (some 15+ years later!) finally sealed the deal. I picked up a 95 YJ with a 4 cyl and 120K for (what I think was) a song. It's got a little rust here and there, but nothing serious. Runs fine so far.

This will be a summer car for me and the kids, so I'll be looking for some kind of softtop. I haven't done enough research to know what kind yet. How do you all store your hardtops over the summer? Anything special? I wouldn't be surprised if this one has never been off the jeep since it was listed on the original sticker, which I got with the car.

I'm sure it will need a little work to pass inspection, and the serpentine belt is going. I went to pick one up and I couldn't believe how many varieties there are. They asked me how many idlers it had?? I said I'd take it off and just bring it in. The exhaust has a nice rattle from a loose cover on the catalytic converter, but other than that, the belt and some rust work, I'm just starting to think about it. I'm sure some wheels and tires will be early on the list.

Is it worth my while to pick up the Chilton's book?

Anyhow, just wanted to say hi. I'll be here and reading along. If anyone has any comments or suggestions, or pointers to good places to get started, I'm all ears.

Thanks!

Change every fluid in it, go with synthetic if you can, pick up a Clymers, Haynes or Chiltons and have fun. Go to any number of Jeep or 4X4 parts websites and shop around for a soft top.

welcome to the forum... as for storing my hardtob i dont really do anything to special... used to keep it in the barn under a tarp and now i keep it in the garage and it has stayed in pretty good shape for me.. i do keep it off the ground a few inches on some boards or something just in case i get some standing water... rather not have it soaking in water... and with the chilton of haynes manual, i would recommend them, i have one and they come in very handy with repairs from basic fixes to more complex problems they are great

Welcome.....Yeah, I would get a Chilton or Haynes, you'll need sooner or later. Bestop makes a nice top and you can get it with sliding windows too.

"so I'll be looking for some kind of softtop". Man you opened yourself up to this. There is a guy named Geoff(Yeah he can't spell) that works for Bestop. I'm sure he can help recommend a brand. (Just kidding Geoff). Also welcome to the great world of Jeep. Us square eyes are a breed apart from the rounders out there so we have to stick together.

You might need to blame that spelling on my Mom.

phillytom: You've got a few months before summer fever hits. Meanwhile, call Quadratec, JCWhitney and 4WD and get the catalogs. Fold a few pages down on the stuff you like. And then I can tell you why Bestop is the best way to go!

And congrats on your new ride. Looks really nice. Those square headlights are starting to grow on me.

Hey... just joined myself... Just yesterday I bought a '95 Wrangler. I have made no modifications yet, but it's clear that my main concern will be electrical.
Anyway, just thought I'd say hello since we both find ourselves in the same scenerio!
