new member and just got a stock 95 yj....???

Hi everyone. Ok, so I'm new to jeeping and offroading
I just bought a 95 yj, 6 cyl, automatic , 60,000 miles, stock.
I also just bought a RC 4 inch lift, 33 x 12.50 tires, and black steel wheels.
I'm going to install this on Thanksgivings 4 day weekend.

Questions:
1. Anyone know what my stock gears are?
2. Will I need new gears for freeway driving? Lite offroading?
3. Do I need a new drive shaft and SYE?
4. Is there anything I'm missing?

I will probably only do lite off roading and minimal freeway driving.
I know their is no exact answer. Just let me know what you guys would do in this situation. Also $$ are becoming limited at this point.

im guessing you will want to regear for those larger tires, if you have the dana 35 in back you will want a new rear end

regear for sure at the minimum with stock dana35, you probably have 3.07 or something similar. You want to have 4.10s or 4.88s with 33s. Also its quite possible to snap your rear axles with the tires you are running, you are going to want to do research into upgrading your axle to a Ford 8.8 or 9in axle (out of a ford explorer) heres some info on that:

or getting something like a super35 or something like that but those things are expensive, i would seriously consider the 8.8

Looks like an 8.8 is in my future. Any opinions on a SYE or longer drive line? Which first SYE and driveline or 8.8?

So I just found on craigslist ford 8.8 rearend $150.00. The pic looks like drum breaks but can't tell for sure. Also found new 10.88 gears for the 8.8 for $100.00 on craigslist. How is that for the price?

Right, I just did more research. I think 4.88 might just be to much for what I will be using it for. 4.10 will probably work better. Think I may just pick up the 8.8 rear end and save it for when I get all the parts (SYE,Drive shaft,Gears) ready to go and upgrade all at once. For now I think I will lift it run 33's and start piecing together everything else.

4.56 is the way to go. I run a 4" lift with 33's and 4.56 gears with locking diffs. Offroading it will go where alot of big rigs can't and it behaves pretty well on the road. Be sure to upgrade that axle asap to something stronger. I prefer the Dana44 but the 8.8 will work fine

Dana 35 will work fine for what your doing. Obviously 8.8 is better but is more expensive and not needed for what you described (occasional light wheeling). I ran 33s open for a year and 35s locked for a year with zero problems with hard wheeling. I had the 8.8 ready for when it broke but it never did. In my opinion it will be fine, find stock 4.10 geared axles from a four cylinder and bolt them up

not trying to call you out, but there are many instances on this board alone of 35s snapping. Especially when you add oversized tires and lockers. But i agree for light off roading you should be OK, just watch your axle and all the components of the drivetrain for anything out of the ordinary (and keep some $$$ set aside)

It will be light wheeling. I'm kinda of leaning towards geting the 8.8 and like you having it ready if/when the Dana 35 breaks. If it doesn't break I can always sell the 8.8 for what I paid to get it. Great info everyone. I've learned so much in the last few day.

Offroad your Jeep a few times before you raise the COG it might just suprise you. The way it sits it is light years ahead of your driving offroad skills. Offroad takes a new skill set to be good at, and it's learned through doing. Good luck. And wwelcome to the forum.

You got me for a minute. After thinking about it I bet COG is Center Of Gravity?? See told you all I'm learning.

I've done some light off roading with my brother and a few of his friends that belong to a jeep club in Casa Grande,AZ. The problem I had was my under carriage would rub and once got hung up on a large rock. Felt like I just needed a bit more clearence.....Maybe I also picked the wrong line.

I say light off roading because these guy were climbing in rocks or boulders that I thought was crazy. I had a good time watching but always took the bi-pass route and still got hung up. I have no intention of doing what they were doing but I would enjoy going out and watching them break stuff and not geting stuck on the bi-pass route.

I grew up in Glendale,AZ class of '90 and now live in Tucson. Casa Grande has really change a lot since '87. They actually have PAVED roads now JK. But really it's gotten a lot bigger. Are you still in AZ?

I agree. Lift it and run your 33's w/ the D35. See what it does before you spent the money. find a Ford 8.8 w/ disk brakes and hold on to it.

Then spend some more money later and do the 8.8/gears/etc. if needed. Welcome to owning a Jeep and being broke
