New owner of a YJ

I am buying my first 91 YJ (have a XJ so not all new to jeeps) this weekend that needs a fair amount of TLC. My dad, good buddy, and I are going to fix the rust and redo everything. What are some nice and tasteful mods? Any big things to check out or known problems that are a pain.

Thanks!

A 50th anniversary edition. Excellent choice.
YJ's all seem to have their own problems and quirks. Biggest thing to worry about is that rust. Anything mechanical can be fixed but rust will eat a Jeep alive if left unchecked.
Check with your local dealership also and make sure your YJ has received all of it's recalls.

I agree. 91 is a good choice. Bought mine about six months ago with 91k and very little rust. The I6 would "stumble" some times and the fuel milage sucked, +-10mpg. Fixed some vacum leaks, replaced the TPS,O2 sensor, fuel filter, fuel pump and it ran good but the milage didn't improve much. About two weeks ago I had a new cataletic converter instaled and the jeep runs great. Milage has gone to 14.5 - 15mpg witch isn't great but beats the heck out of 10. I'm still running stock 3.55 gears with 35" tires and fifth gear is prity much useless. I plan on doing a 8.8 swap in the rear with 4.88 gears and 4.88s and a locker up front. That should put me at 2600 rpm at 70 mph in 5th gear. Hopefully 16+ mpg.

Yep. I think '91 was the first year for the FI 6. The 4 bangers had it a couple years earlier.

Well the the motor in it is actually pretty new it is a mopar crate 4.0 with only 20000 and the frame and body have only 140000 on it.

BTW what kind of fuel mileage am I looking at as this will be my daily driver I plan on running 31's.

Well when I bought mine I was hopeing for 18-20 mpg. Guess I was dreaming. Aparently anything over 10-12 mpg is doing prity good with a lift and over sized tires. 31"s I would think you should get north of 15 mpg if you keep your right foot off the floor.
