New (to me) Jeep

Alright Guys, here goes, just finished purchasing my first jeep, it's a 1988 Jeep Wrangler 6 cyl with 90k miles. Nothing cosmetically wrong to speak of. Hell, it's 20 years old and got the normal dings, scratches, and dents.

Here is the work up on it. The previous owner, while towing it to my town, did not take the driveshafts off of the vehicle. Hence, the front driveshaft began to wobble and rather than taking the time to take them both off. He thought the wobble would go away if he went faster. Now the transfer case has a rather large hole in the front of it and the front driveshaft is somewhere between Ft. Worth and San Antonio.

I got a really good deal, but where do I search for cheap parts suce as a transfer case and a driveshaft.

Second, would a novice handyman be capable of swapping this out, or would it be better to bring it to the pros.

welcome, i love seein more square headlights. np 231 t case is cheap and easy to find, most of us here got one layin around, i know i do, along with drive shafts. most can replace it themselves, just nuts and bolts. note: the skid plate under it, does hold it up, so support the t case before unbolting skid plate.

the dealer will sell just the case half or find a trans shop see if they have one laying around swapin is easy if you can change your oil you can do this. 4 bolts attach the t-case to the trans. about three bolts hold the shift linkage to the t-case then the mount on bottom is two bolts (i think). it should take only 3 or so hours good luck. congrats on your purchase. another one bit by the bug!!!

Will give it a go. Working on the road this week. Thanks for all the help. Anyone else got anything, really, I am all ears. This was a quick purchase and I am excited about getting it on the road, more than that, on the range...

great to see someone from my neck of the woods (nonwoods).

i PM'd you, but i just had a thought...you can serch for the np231 from other YJs or TJs and from the 4x4 S-10 p/u and blazer. they use the same np231 we do. like i mentioned, just check the input shaft spline count and make sure it matches yours. that will be based on the output of the tranny. example, an AX5 tranny will have one output spline count and an AX15 will have another. i believe the AX15 has a higher count of 23, while the AX5 is 21. not 100% on that, but i know it's at least the case.

if the one you find is different, it can be swapped.

like jpdocdave was saying, this tcase is a dime a dozen. i wouldn't buy a brand new one when there are too many used ones sitting around between austin and san antonio.

in a quick CL search, i just found this one out of a s-10 for $100....
http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/pts/623337937.html

and this guy is selling the internals from his YJ np231 for $30....
http://austin.craigslist.org/pts/611372168.html
of course if yours has a hole in the actual case, the internals won't be much use.

there is another guy selling his YJ 5spd trans and tcase for $350.

craigslist is the place to go for this kinda stuff IMO.
