New to site 88 Wrangler Help

Bought a 1988 Wrangler that has been sitting in a barn for four years, needs lots of tlc!! Having problems getting the left front axle out to change a bad u joint. Got the brakes off and the three bolts holding the bearing carrier on , but it won't budge. The 88 looks like it comes apart in pieces while th 91 and up comes apart as one piece unit. They show a puller hooking on the lugs and pushing it against the axle shaft on the 91 and up, wont it break some thing inside the axle if you force it too hard? Somebody must have some experience taking these apart Thanks Gordie
