Newbee and just bought first jeep

Hello everyone

I just bought a 1990 wrangler yesterday . It has 31x10.5 ss tsl's on it it has a lift it looks likes suspension and body. The guy I bought it from didnt drive it that much and didnt really know alot about it. He said the guy before him put new gears in the front and rear ends. It has a electrical lockout in the front.

I have a few questions I am hoping you can solve for me.

Do alot of parts swap out from the 87-95 year wranglers?

I am going to pull the covers off the pumpkinsin the front and rear to try and figure out what gearing is in it. The guy said he was going to drop a new tranny and 350 in and lost intrest. What can I do to help give the little motor that wants to run run a bit longer before i get some fundage and do the motor and tranny swap???

I know a little about tearing them apart and putting them back together but am egger to try and learn.

Any and all help is welcome and appriceated.

Tanks again

Welcome to the Forum!

Many, many parts interchange between the YJ years. Many others that are engine-specific do not. It's always a good idea to ask until you are pretty sure you know what's swappable and what isn't. I assume since you're talking about an engine swap, you've got the 4-banger. With the right gearing and tires, that's a good little motor. How many miles on the clock?

Don't forget to wave!

Tanks for the welcome

For miles it has 145000. What is the right gearing, and tires? I can find 4 bangers on ebay for 500 shipped might just stick with it. Any tranny work also.

Tanks

Welcome aboard Krusty Zipper. We are going to have to see some pics of this monster of yours. The right gearing depends on the tires. Since it already has upgraded gears you may be in good shape already. Instead of pulling the dif covers and counting teeth you can put the rear axle on stands and turn the drive shaft as many times as it takes to turn the wheels one complete revolution. You can get accurate enough to determine if you have 4.56's of 4.88's. Either of which will turn your 31's just fine. Your Jeep would have had 4.10's stock.

Sorry had to ask but the stock '90 4 banger came with 4.10? My '90 4.2L only has 3.54 for stock...I got the short end of the stick because of engine size?

The 4 cyl needs the lower gears to compensate for the power the engine lacks.
