Nutter bypass? help please

Ive done everything to do in the nutter bypass and i can get it started now. im pretty sure its got to do with the timing. the problem is, my distributor wont turn anymore because of the vacuum hose coming off of it to turn anymore towards the engine. the engine block stops it. when i have the distributor as far as it can go i can try to start it with the accelerator slightly down and it will barly spark at all and make a puhh sound when i let off the key. any help would be great. should i just go back to stock settings and forget about the nutter bypass?

the orange circle is what is blocking me from turning the distributor cap anymore. it hits the engine block where the orange arrow points.

not taking credit for this picture. found it online

you shouldn't have to turn the distributor out that much. i'm guessing that far out would make it somewhere around 18-20║

Ive tried starting it from where it was originally at all the way to the engine. and right when it gets to the engine i can get a little "puhh" sound out of the engine when i stop turning the key.

Did this all of a sudden start happening, where you can't turn on your Jeep? Let's start from the basics. Are you getting fuel to the engine? The "puhh" is normal if it's just cranking, it is cranking right?

Are you running fuel injection or carb? Is it the stock FI or Carb? Having to push down the gas to start it is normal up to half way down sometimes.

its started up fine. but i had another post saying i had poor acceseration and was told to try the nutter bypass. so i did now this happend. i can change back to stock settings if i need to.

its carb. just rebuilt stock carb. yes ive always had to push the gas in a but to start it up, and i know how much i need to push in the pedal, ive learned that over the years ive been driving it.

yes it is cranking. that sounds fine. just no fire

yep give me a call mon if you still need the help.

This is a Picture Guide to Nutter Bypass - JeepForum.com

starting from the middle of the of the dist. travel
have someone crank the engine while you turn the dist. until it starts .

then set the timing to 8 degree's with a timing light and you do know to take the vacuum line off the dist. advance and plug it up while setting the timing .

do not leave it running much over 8 degree's or you can cause engine damage .

if it won't start check a plug to see if it is sparking at all if it is not you might of fried the ing. mod. and will need to replace it ( have it tested at parts store if no spark at plug )

like i said before don't worry you will have it up and running in no time .

when i did my nutter conversion i didn't turn the dist that far and i ran mine at 8 degrees as well i think u need to check all ur wiring and then turn the distributor so that the vacuum advance is facing the front of the jeep and then have a buddy/ anyone try and turn it over move the distributor in small increments and see if u get an better results

I also think he has a bad Ignition Control Module, that's why there is no or little spark and it won't start. I don't think it's a carb. problem. Sorry Scott, I know I'm in the minority but I like the Carters. When it's tuned and adjusted properly they're great. I hope I don't need your advice but if I come around it's good to know you're there to help.

To the left of the battery on the fire wall. Actually a part of the coil assembly.
