Hi all,
I've owned my 93 YJ 2.5l for almost a year now and I love the thing to death. It is my dd and I have no trouble with it other than lack of a/c (I'm in Georgia) I guess it what I bargained for. My question to the more seasoned owners is that I am looking for an upgrade for my jeep so to speak. I realize I will not be able to pour money into mods(lift, bigger tires ect) for my jeep now without an engine swap/drive train modifications. Because of this I have been trying to look for either a 4.0l YJ or one of the older v8/i6 cjs on craigslist to replace my current yj. I have restored the life of this yj with new paint stereo ignition ect and I'm wondering how easy it would be to trade/ sell it and what would be a reasonable price, I bought it for 3200. I'm obviously not looking for a new mint 4.0/Cj but something that will provide me a better modding platform down the road. Any thoughts/advice? All is appreciated.

You can actually do quite a bit of wheeling with the 2.5L engine. Offroad, it generally does okay. Highway and on road is where it bogs down with larger tires, extra armor weight, etc.

That being said, I think you'll be much happier with the 4.0L.

Selling and rebuying is probably better than doing the engine swap - both in cost and complexity and time. This is coming from someone who did the 4.0L swap.

The TJ Rubicon is a great build platform, if you can afford it. The stronger axles and air lockers and 4:1 transfer case are all great upgrades.

Leaf springs are easier to deal with, and less expensive. I'd stick with fuel injection, so a 91-95 YJ would probably work well.

There isn't anything wrong with modding a 2.5L YJ. You just have to have the mentality of "you can go fast but I can go anywhere". And you will be fine.

As long as you don't want to drive fast or like an idiot, there isn't any reason that I can think of for not making the same mods on a 4cyl that you would on a 6cyl.

I have a jasper 4.0 in mine n it's sittin on 33's and it still can be a pooch on steep hills so I can only imagine how a 2.5 would be. Never owned any jeep without the 4.0 so in my opinion it's a good upgrade. I do not believe the 4.0's are as rare as you think it's just people are probably a lil more likely to keep them or snag them up the second they go up for sale. Keep your eyes out n you will find what you want, may just have to broaden your search n travel a lil farther
