pavement ends soft top

I have a 94 wrangler, I'm looking into getting a new soft top. I've been looking at the Pavement Ends soft top. I'm trying to save a little money going this way than getting a Best top. Is it worth saving the hundred bucks or just get a Best Top. Thanks for your opinions.

Man save the $$ for a best top. I had a pavement ends top, and hated it. I saved up and got a supertop.

The pavement ends top seemed really thin. I thought I was going to rip it every time I put it up.

The Pavement Ends isn't a bad top. I ran one for a while and it kept things dry and it lasted longer than my previous one. After several years the stitching started coming undone, but that was more due to my abuse than due to the quality of the product. I'm currently running a Rampage top and I think it's a excellent value for the money and great quality and features. You can check the vendor section for a deal on those. The Bestop is a great quality top as well. I don't think you can go wrong with either the Rampage or Bestop.

Do you have hardware you can reuse?

Pavement Ends uses the same basic technology and style as Bestop.
The fabric is thinner, the warranty is not as good, and replacement parts are not available.

For example, Bestop uses more expensive zippers, which allows any side panel to be zipped in to the top. PE uses less expensive zippers that come in a matched set - so you can't replace side panels.

But PE stuff is well made, and will work fine. It's a decent budget based decision.

I'm not positive of this, but I think PE is especially popular with people who don't plan to keep the Jeep a long time, but need a new top to help sell it.

(note: PE is a sister company of Bestop's, so I'm not slagging on the competition here)

This is something I did not know. Has it always been this way with the PE stuff? I had mine a while back before Bestop and PE joined up. One thing that impressed me with both the PE top and Bestop that I previously had was that I never had a problem with my driver's or passenger's window (I know you're referring to the rear windows, but just relaying my experience with the good quality of the fronts).

Just to be clear in this thread so no one reads it the wrong way, when I mentioned my experience with the PE top lasting longer than my previous top I discussed, it was not a Bestop. I had a Bestop on another YJ I owned and was perfectly happy with it.

Clear as mud?

Thanks for the quick replys. I do have all the hardware. I was under the assumption you needed to replace the soft tops every so many years anyway. My Jeep has a black Best Top,I don't know what the doors or the back sides are;the doors and the sides are grey. In all, I don't think I'll get past the summer with what I have now. The budget I'm on now, PE is a good option, even if it last two years till the situation clears and I could get a Best Top. Thank you again for the advice.

Chris: Yes, but that's not just a PE thing. It's true for all the "lower tier" tops, I believe. They've told me the name for the Bestop zippers, but I've forgotten.

shavedsasquach: We need to identify the type of hardware you have (factory or Supertop or something else).

If you have decent hardware still, you can save money by buying new fabric and windows. Start here, and let me know what type of hardware you've got. The easiest way to tell is where the bows mount to the Jeep. If they're on the rollbar, it's probably factory.

You'll still have choices, since both Pavement Ends and Bestop offer replacement fabric (as do others). But you're going to save some $$.

Hardware lasts a LOT longer than the fabric.

Then look at the Replay top from Pavement Ends.
Or the Replace-a-Top from Bestop.

That's fabric and windows, but your hardware. Lots cheaper.

Not the best from a price standpoint, but the Sailcloth Replace-A-top is probably our best reviewed product ever. It's going to hurt your budget though. The regular RAT is really good too.

Watch the options: some of them come with doors, some without (depends on whether you have full steel doors or half doors). Some have tinted windows and some have clear (your preference).

And the great thing is that if you get in touch with Wrangler Forum sponsors, a lot of times they'll give you a special private price on products like Bestop that won't hurt the budget as much.
