You definitely want to check the entire frame. You're looking for a good metal "tink" sound. Any part that thuds or is soft to the touch will need to be repaired. Also remember that frames usually rot from the inside out. What looks like surface rust, could be rotted through. When I got mine home and hit the rotted section with a pick hammer, it was 10x worse than I thought.
Awesome, thanks! Luckily I'm in a region where rust doesn't seem to be as prevalent, so I think it should
check out ok. I really don't know anything about Jeeps, so having a little bit of knowledge of what to look for headed into the deal will help me out a lot. So basically, if it rides tight, doesn't leak any fluids, doesn't look rigged and the frame is in good shape, it should be a pretty solid buy?
