Possibly buying a YJ this weekend

I posted a similar thread in the TJ section earlier about buying my very first Jeep soon. I am looking at a couple, and one of them is a 1992 4.0L, 5spd, with 123,000 miles. The guy I'm buying it from got it completely stock and has repainted it, lined the interior, lined the hard top, and threw a 4" rough country lift on it. My dilemma is, I don't know what to really look for other than the obvious things (fluids leaking, pings and taps and other funky noises.) Do you guys have any insight into what I should pay particular attention to when I'm looking it over?

I was told to look for frame rot by shackle perches and such.

That's what I'd say is the most important thing, also check the floor pans for gaping rust holes and I'd also look over the engine and dash not only for leaking but also "ghetto" rigging or half assing... Jeeps are money pits but the less rust and PO mess up you have to fix the happier your wallet and significant other will be.

Thanks for the input. I've been talking to this guy a lot this week and he seems to really know his stuff. I was supposed to go look at it first thing tomorrow morning, but he called me about an hour ago and said that he barely made it home from work today, took off the distributor cap and said it was toast. He said he'll be putting on a new cap and plug wires in the AM to see if that's all it was. If that fixes the problem, is there anything I should be worried about on that front, any potential underlying issues?

You definitely want to check the entire frame. You're looking for a good metal "tink" sound. Any part that thuds or is soft to the touch will need to be repaired. Also remember that frames usually rot from the inside out. What looks like surface rust, could be rotted through. When I got mine home and hit the rotted section with a pick hammer, it was 10x worse than I thought.

Awesome, thanks! Luckily I'm in a region where rust doesn't seem to be as prevalent, so I think it should check out ok. I really don't know anything about Jeeps, so having a little bit of knowledge of what to look for headed into the deal will help me out a lot. So basically, if it rides tight, doesn't leak any fluids, doesn't look rigged and the frame is in good shape, it should be a pretty solid buy?

Hopefully I'll be posting some pictures tomorrow
