Potential Purchase, Suggestions Please

Newb looking to buy first offroader, a wrangler. Browsing through craigslist and came across this interesting ride for sale, 1990 JEEP Wrangler / Lifted.

I spoke with the seller today and it seems like it could be a decent purchase. Seller is asking $5500. Seller said there’s no rust and that he bought it from a 70 year old woman three months ago and she bought it from a dealer. CARFAX shows that last 7 years had only 12,000 miles added. CARFAX is clean with no accidents or damage reported to them; failed emissions test JAN06, designated “GROSS POLLUTER” by CA. Seller doesn’t have repair, maintenance, or service records.

Has original 4.0L V6 engine with the odometer at 115,000. 4” factory lift, new tranny and transfer case. Newly rebuilt front end because original was loose. 33” 12.5 15 tires have approx 20-30% life remaining. Has soft top. AC and heat work.

May go out and see it tomorrow and if I like what I see, take it to a dealer or garage to have a mechanic inspect after some on and off road test driving.

I may just end up waiting until we transfer to San Diego in a couple weeks. There are more wranglers for sale there for my price than up here. I was really hoping to have one bought before we transfer. I'm not going to pressure myself into a purchase just to meet a deadline though.

Suggestions, comments, advise please. Thanks for the help guys.

Welcome and good luck on finding your first Jeep!!

First off I wouldn't trust what someone tells me about a vehicle they are trying to sell, I would have to check it out and see for myself. I have been in that situation and was in a rush to get it and I after the fact I had a lot of trouble out of it. Always look it over well. Another thing that gets me is why would he buy it and turn around and sell it 3 months later??? I would need to find out about that one. Lastly if he doesn't have any papers for the rebuilds or new parts and it isn't showing on the CARFAX then that's gonna be a tough one unless you can tell it is new and has been messed with but still if I could see it I would still take it to a mechanic to get it checked out.

I'm not saying it's not a good deal or that the guy is lying but I have seen this happen all too many times. Hope you find what you're looking for!!!

several things seem fishy,

first 4.0's weren't in jeeps til 91, so he either has the year wrong, its a 4.2, or a 4.0's been put in.

second the factory didn't install lifts.

third why would he sell it again in 3 months.

the 4l is an i6 not v6.. wasn't in wranglers until 91 as mentioned already.. if it has a new tranny and transfer case chances are it had a different motor put in it.. else its the 4.2.. easiest way to tell is if he has a pic of under the hood if its got a carbuerator then its probably a 4.2.. have him send a pic then post it here

Thanks for the input guys.

PaulRevere1991, correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t the 4.2L I6 OHV 12V 2 BBL Engine an available option while the 2.5L I4 OHV 8V FI Engine was standard? CARFAX has it as a 1990 with 4.2L I6 2BL. I know the seller had it as 4.0L. The seller doesn’t seem extremely jeep savvy. Can’t factory lifts or factory lift kits be installed afterwards by anyone?

Says he’s hesitant to sell, but put it out there to get back what he put into it, $5500 ($5000 for the jeep and $500 for rebuilt front end). His kid is going to college and returning a car. Says he has too many vehicles. I don’t think I’d pay $5500 though. I’m going to see it tomorrow and will have a mechanic dig through it if I’m interested and if he’s willing to come down on price.

wkg2009, trust comes with time, I don’t know this guy, so I don’t trust him. There are so many shady people out there. All I can do is try to cover all my bases. I don’t like having to buy via private party, but there aren’t any dealers selling wranglers for $5000. This forum has provided some good info in addition to my own research.

Yes the 4.2 was an option.. factory lift would suggest that it came lifted by Jeep from the Jeep manufacturing plant.. no wrangler with a lift option from the factory..

Church, dunno, maybe bingo. CARFAX has this jeep as having the title issued or updated twice in the last nine months.

Haha I was thinking the same thing! If my 70 year old grandma was to try and get in that she would throw her hip out of place but you do have the die hard weight lifting, treadmill jogging grannies at the Y every now and then!
