preparing for rain?

Ok...I hope this isn't a dumb ?. I am fairly new to Jeeps. Had a 95 yj since about feb time frame, and I would love to run topless all the time but I am worried about messing something up. Is there any type of preperation or special anything that I need to do in order to leave the top off and forget about it? I don't want to have to run outside and dry my seats everytime it rains to keep it from mildewing or something. I don't want to fry my stereo (even though it is cheap.) I see everyone saying that "it has drain plugs for a reason" but I thought that was a just in case sort of thing. So what do y'all think?

The guy I bought my Jeep from kept the top off for like a year. He says the radio never really got wet because its kinda under the dash. But other stuff got rusted from the water.

What about a bikini top?

Thumbs down Ditto

I literally bought mine last weekend. I'm wondering about the same question. I bought a top for it that basically gives you just a roof but keeps everything else open. Should I be worried about anything in particular? I would like to keep my hard top off for the great weather of the fall.

For the first time last night it rained. Like I said above, I've got a top that covers the front seats. The sides and the back seat are exposed. Mine is a 1990 YJ Wrangler. I went out this morning after the rain and saw that my top had collected rain on top. I had to dump it basically. A lot ran down over the passenger door (with the windows rolled down). I'm actually more worried now about the top stretching. Should this be a concern?

Bikini tops are made to shade you from the sun, not keep you dry. Water will collect and they will stretch. Get yourself a trail cover and throw it on when you park it unless you happen to enjoy a good case of swampa$$.
It only takes a couple of minutes to throw on.

So, this still doesn't anwer anything. If I had to cover it I should just leave the top on. Will the rain hurt the speakers? Do I need a marine radio? Should I take the radio out of the dash and put it in the console? What about the dash lights? will it short them out? Or am I just making way more out of this than there should be?

I run with soft top down and Spidertop. I also have taken out the carpets and had The interior lined with Rhino Guard Tuffgrip. I get caught in the ocassional Florida showers and pull out the floor drain plugs. I really have not noticed any effect on the radio yet. I have thought about getting the cover for the steering wheel while its parked. I have also gotten pretty good at putting up the soft Top in about 4 minutes , with the windows out.

My Jeep has been soaked several times since I owned it. The last time made me get a waterproof Tuffy box for my radio. I've never had issues with my gauges nor ignition after getting rained on though. Last night we had a pretty bad storm & my new radio didn't get a drop on it. You also might want to look at getting your interior rhino lined, or hercu-lined yourself. Next step, water resistant seats.

I run a bikini top from april thru October and I only cover it if it is calling for rain. I use a bikini top and a bestop cover on my JK and YJ.

Second the trail cover

Trail cover or a garage...

Humidity will kill your jeep...

A little science experiment for you. Park your Jeep outside and head out about 2 in the morning. Feel the top of your roll bars, dash and seats. Feel wet? All that moisture is EVERYWHERE ... Humidity knows no bounds... moisture gets in the electronics, under dash, in your fuse panel.

Drain plugs are there for when you go mudding and want to powerwash your tub out. Jeep carpet cleans up well with a powerwash. Leaving your Jeep exposed to the elements all the time will end in a very worn out Jeep.

I go year round with my top off but park in the garage at night. Do yourself a favor and buy a trail cover or get in the habit of putting the top up at night...but please don't just leave it out unprotected...

Agreed...it takes me about 3 minutes to throw a trail cover on by myself, about 45 seconds if the wife helps. They're only about 75 bucks if I remember.

I carry a tube of silicon sealant in my center console, just in case. It's white just like my YJ. I have used it twice in the past
