Looking at getting a YJ. Upper end of the budget is $6k. Will only buy a I6 with 5 spd. Now just because my budget is $6k doesn't mean I have to spend all of it.
1st question: What are people paying for YJs with I6 and 5spd? $6k seems to be close to the asking price on a clean rig. Is this reasonable? I am in Austin, TX. What are people paying for their YJs?
2nd question: Those in TX, what's the opinion on A/C? Is it worth it? Can it even keep up with the heat when only with a bikini top on? This is NOT going to be a DD so I am not all that concerned about A/C...except my last truck didn't have it and became a work truck that was only used about once a month and only for trips to Home Depot, early in the morning. My guess is that it really doesn't matter since we're only going to have a bikini on the Jeep 60% of the time and the other 40% it won't even have that on (it is really sunny if you have never been to Austin so having some shade is always a plus.
Bonus question: Can you wear a cowboy hat while driving at highway speeds and the top off? Never tried that so I don't know...
#1 I would go to kbb.com and price out what you are looking for. it takes into account what region of the country you are in and will give you dealer prices and private party sale prices. You can use that as a guide.
#2 AC is not going to make a difference without a top. I run mine in Arkansas with a bikini and windjammer all summer and it is comfortable. We get mid to upper 90's in temp regularly.
Bonus: better wear a strap to hold it on!!! No. it will blow away.

Will the cowboy hat really blow off? I don't know, because I have never owned one. I do know that the hat is aerodynamically shaped to prevent it from blowing off some cow pokes head as he rides the dusty trail. The hat actually pushes down tighter on the head as you ride.
I got my YJ as it sits (besides tints, exhaust, and slip yoke elimenator) for $4,000, including hardtop, softop, soft doors, hard doors, bar doors, bikini top, etc... and it had only 44,000 miles on it ... I6 5spd..

Just wait for the right one to come along.... aka a seller that doesnt know how well jeeps hold their value...
A lot of the time, you can find a rig already set up for the trial at a reasonable price. I gave $5000 for mine year and half ago and it already had lift and different tires on it. I have since added tube fenders and winch/bumper. All depends on what you are looking to do with it. As for a/c, I never use mine. I always have the bikini top on, or no top at all - nothing like cruising around with no doors on!!! I am going to switch my a/c compressor over to air compressor here before long.
spring over lift with BDS springs

Hanson Frt bumper & Warn 9.5Ti
D30 Frt, 8.8 Rear, Tom Woods driveshaft
Slip Yoke Elinimator kit
i'm not sure if it was a good deal or not...but for what it's worth i paid $5k for mine. it's a 93 5sp w/ a four-banger...already had 35 bfg mt's...soa...sye...4:88 gears...sturdy winch bumper...custom rear tire swing...rocker slides and corner diamond plates. high on miles though at 133k. runs top notch though.
this weekend i'm putting the aussie locker in up front. and monday it goes to the shop to have a regeared 8.8 with a detriot locker swapped in!!
It sounds like $5900 while a little high isn't too unreasonable for already having a lift, wheels and tires and the fact that I am only looking at inline 6 (4.0L) engines. It would seem that the 4.0L engine instantly adds about $1000 to the price of the vehicle and a 5spd/4.0L is probably the most popular stock drivetrain combination. If not the most popular at least the combination able to command the highest resale value.
Checking out the one tonight. Hope to check out another on Saturday, about the same price.
Well I went and checked out the Jeep for $5900. A fair price if in excellent condition. Unfortunately it ranked closer to fair.
33x12.5, but they were over 50% worn and would need replacing fairly soon. Not sure how streetable they were. Didn't really recognize the name brand, they looked more show than go. Totally worthless off-road given how worn they were.
3" spring lift with pro comp shocks. Could have been good, but were put on before he bought the Jeep so were of indeterminate age really.
Tubular bumpers...not my thing.
Ran okay, windshield wipers didn't work, windshield was cracked (expected) and the body was beat up.
Seats were missing bolts (as in they were not totally connected to the body/frame).
In all way over priced for what you got. It was built up to look off road but wasn't really what I wanted. Guess I need to find something stock cheaper so I don't have to pay for someone elses crappy choices.
