Ones anyone else have an issue with getting gas pumps to pump gas in their yj? Every time I try to put gas in mine the pump shuts off after a second or two, some gas stations are worse than others and no matter how I position the pump in the hole it wants to shit off. It got so bad today that I finally got so fed up with it I only got 11 dollars in gas. Anyone have any fixes? Suggestions?
quite a few people have this problem i dont really have an issue other than gettin the nozzle to fit under my light guards but normally i just push on it and it goes right in, everybody pumps it differently but luckily i dont have to adjust the nozzle any, i have seen where people relocate there filler neck to the side instead of under the taillight
I don't have a problem if I hold the nozzle in the 5 o'clock position. I know others reverse the license plate bracket so the plate flips down instead of up. That works. Others remove the plate and bracket entirely and mount the plate on the spare tire. That works. Still others move the fill location entirely to the driver side rear. It's up to you but try the 5 o'clock position first.

Took me a few tanks to figure out the nozzle just wasnt getting in far enough. The gas stations with the long rubber boot on the nozzle are still difficult but as long as i compress it enough and hold the nozzle in place itll pump full speed. I usually hold it straight up (12 o'clock) and giggle up and down to get it in.
I modded the filler neck clock position, it worked for a while. But they must have started changing the nozzles in the past few months. I'm starting to find less and less gas pumps this mod is working with. I found that if I hold the nozzle at about 3 or 9 o'clock it helps. But I still have to pump slow (I've never "un-done" the mod).
Like I said, I thought I solved the mystery... reckon not. If anyone figures it out please post cause it freakin annoying taking 10+ minutes to fill up ya know. But I did discover how to hack a locking gas cap in seconds!! LOL
Mine are flush mount, and I don't have a tag plate, Still have this problem. Gotta keep turning the nozzle different directions til I find one that work. It's frustrating.
Yeah mine took a few to get figure it out n sometimes I still have issues I need to just barely put the nozzle in and lift up so some of the nozzle is in front of my tail light lol only thing is to watch it cause it don't stop overflow lol gotten my shoes wet a few times -.-
I dread having to put gas in my yj just for the simple fact that I know if it's in the morning I might as well leave my house an extra 20 minutes early lol. Half the time I just wanna bang my head off the steal bumper
I like this lol.. but yes I second the 5 oclock position. The main problem for us YJ owners is the hippies who decide to control what happens to the environment. Those stupid rubber fume stoppers are a PITA. Every time I fuel up even on my 2011 it feels like the damn nozzle is going to fall out just because of the rubber crap. Just my opinion.
Last case trick is to pull the rubber boot back with your finger so it doesn't seal against the opening. This lets vapors escape and keeps the noozle from shutting off from fumes. I rarely have to do this, the 5 oclock angle works for me.
Just an idea. Granted I'm a noob, but I used to have a Mustang with the same problem. It took 10 minutes to fill up which really sucked if it was raining. It ended up being a clogged vent line from the gas tank that wasn't letting the air escape fast enough causing the pump to shut off. The vent line had an orifice in it that I " modified " with an 3/16" drill bit. Problem solved. Hope this helps.
I use the gas cap to hold the license plate holder open (by wedging between the holder and the edge of the hinge on the right side of the frame, if that make sany sense...LOL) and then i let the nozzle hang on the left side of the frame (about the 7 or 8 O'Clock position) and set the gas handle to the lowest setting or sometimes the medium speed setting and it fills most the way without a problem. The last gallon or two I have to use my hand to pump the gas slow enough to keep it from auto shutting off...
Gunna look into this "clogged vent line" thing, I swear I have tryed every position, yes I even tryed upside down but the tail light stopped that idea, thank you for all the help and ideas guys, I enjoy this forum a lot, it's very helpful
Clogged vent is most likely not the problem. My rollover valve was leaking so I temporarily have a piece of tube "looping" my vent. Still worth a try though.
I'm glad you started this thread have had my yj for 3 months and every gas fill is a patience tester Everytime. I can only get 10 gallons in no matter how I hold the handle or how slow I pump the gas. One time I held the handle so barely a trickle was coming out for 10 mins only got 4 dollars of gas lol.
Just read that article redneck and I am gunna try that, not sure it will help the problem but if I can get 20 gallons that will just be less times I have to try n put gas in it in the first place. Thank you
AHHAA!!! I figured it out!! I completely dismantled it from the tank to the filler, couldn't see any reason for it and then I seen it, there was a flap that flips down inside the filler hole to block the gas that goes into the air vent hose and it was stuck wide open preventing the air vent from working at all
Here in mi gas stations don't have that boot thing yu guys are talking about so I knew that wasn't it but I can see how those would suck too Side note: I pumped 15 gallons in my yj today and never cut off once! So happy!!!
I've never been able to pump a full 15 gallons in my yj in 5 years. It's annoying. And I have no idea how to fix it. But I'm glad someone fixed theirs.
Not exactly sure, I found mine out by pure luck and determination, I would start with opening up the gas cap and making sure u see that metal flap. Good luck!
No, I believe the plastic tanks are after market replacement, but could be mistaken.
