Currently I bought a 2.5L 4cyl 95' and it came with new 36" already on.
It has 4:10 gears and suspension lift+3" body lift.
My friends are telling me I'll blow the rear out if I take it out. There saying I HAVE to go smaller, otherwise it'll ruin my clutch as a DD.
I have a set of 33"s with 40-50% tread. Should I make the swap?
I don't mind lower mpg, and a smaller turning radius, I'd really like to keep the 36" on, they look amazing.
But am I in danger of harming the car anytime soon if I don't make the swap?
They also said the smaller tires would give me more power, and I'd be able to go faster then 60-65mph, which I believe.
Any advice would be helpful. Keep in mind the 36's and 33's are my only option, and I have no money to upgrade or buy anything else. I'd really love to keep the 36"s on....but if you guys honestly think I HAVE to make the switch, I guess I'll do it.
i would switch just for the simple reason that u MIGHT blow u rear end...or just dont offroad it to hard.. light trails and stuff u should b fine but if u plan on doing some seriouse wheelin i would do the 33" just to b safe
If you have the 2.5 and your doing 60-65 with 36's then it may have been regeared. The 2.5 came stock with 4.10 fronts and 4.11 rears. I have 4.88s and 33's and before the 4.88s I could barley hit 65-70 with the 33's on. I highly recomend you go with the 33's because the d35 is a weak axle I think everyone with the d35 sticks with 33's and 35's if you dont wheel hard. Also to clear 35's you should have a 4 inch suspension lift and 1 inch body. Having only a +3 inch body lift I'd imagine your gonna do a lot of rubbing. Do you have any pics?
I won't be going on any trails, just using her for a daily driver to and back from school.
The guy I bought it from said it was re-geared for rock crawling, and that he could go max 60mph on the freeway because of it...he must of been confused about the gears and so I don't know what it actually has. he did however use it a lot for crawling.
Here is a picture of the 36"s, sorry for the crap quality. I can drive with them fine, only time I notice rub is if I were crank too hard or try and make a u-turn.
While the stock front axle can live(within reason) with 36's.. the rear if ya take it off road and its still the stock dana 35, is a time bomb. Also by going to 33s your brakes will work much better, might see a slight increase in mpg as well.
36's on a 2.5 as a DD is just so incredibly dangerous, and is asking to wear down every component. If it has the D35 in the rear, then you'd be lucky for it to last any longer- would not offroad it with that setup. I wouldn't put anything over 31" tires on it. BTW, if you're managing 65 on the freeway, and there's room for more speed, then it might already be re-geared.
If it's a D30 and D35 axle, and if it had the 4.10 gears, then take off those tires and put on some 29 or 30" tires. The 2.5 is perfectly fine with those tire sizes, and zips down the freeway easily at around 70 :thumb:
Might be able to trade those wheels for a brand new set of slicks.
Back, also noticed it said Dana on it with 35C in corner
Front, noticed it says Dana 30
So from the above pictures, I understand it's the D30 & D35 right? And i'm about 90% positive it's been re-geared because it did 60 on the freeway (actual speed, not tach speed), and the guy said it would go faster with the 33's it came with.
I guess I'll be stickin' the 33's on tomorrow :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:
Probably take your advice and sell the 36"s for cooler 31's or something.
You guys have been very helpful! Depressing....but helpful.
Yup those are D30 and D35 axles. If you want to run the 36" tires and not have to worry about stuff, then you should consider swapping to a ford 8.8 in the rear and a d60 in the front. For re-gearing and 36" tires, 4.88 would be my suggestion for gears.
But, for now get some 30" tires or something. It probably has 4.88 gears in it now, which means that it would do well with 31's actually.
I have been running 33s on my d30 d35 setup for years! Haven't had a problem yet. Stick with the 33s and have fun. I routinely do 65 to 70 on the way to work with stock gears.
I'm going to make the swap tomorrow morning to 33s and sell the 36s, because it will be awhile before i get $$$ for axels.
I'm new to the whole car thing, so I don't know how much I could get for my tires, anyone care to suggest?
5 - 36" x 13.50R 10LT IROK Super Swampers w/ ~115 miles on 4, and 0 miles on the spare. I have the receipts that show they were serviced with 100 miles, and have the warranty info and all that. Plus I'd sell them with the rims, their nice black ones with red caps(sorry I don't know what you call the center thing).
I'd like to price them to sell within this week because I'm leaving on Friday. If I got enough hopefully i could buy some cool things for her like some lights or the mirror mounts I REALLY want (doorless<3).
If you are happy with the way that it drives now, I would keep the 36's. You can double check the gear ratio to verify that you have 4.10's, then sell the 33's to buy a junkyard 8.8 for $150 and bolt it in. I'm lazy right now, but there are several 8.8 threads on here so you can see how easy it is. That way you keep the 36's, get a better rear axle, and don't have to spend a bunch on axles. If you don't drive it like a complete moron, it should hold together pretty well. Just an idea, good luck.

^IMO the D35 is fine for the regular offroader. You start breaking things when you put big tires on it and expect it to handle your lead foot.
Not sure if you have the track bars on or not, but ditch them. No idea why they were put on in the first place, but there isn't any reason for them to be there.
The front track bar is off, I'm not sure what I'm looking for on the back, as all I see is an axle.
