Real Stupid Dash Lighter Question

My Chiltons could not answer this, so sorry.

Dash lighter does not work. Tried to plug in a phone charger and no little green charge light.

Outlet obviously dead.

Pulled all fuses (there went 20 minutes!) and noticed nothing peculiar.

Question is how do I make the outlet functional? Consider myself a gearhead and decent mechanic but know next to NOTHING about wiring/electricity in this rig!

Muchas Gracias---Brent 93YJ

I'd just pop it out and look at the back side of it and see if the wires are intact/not burned.
Check them for voltage, If you dont have a voltmeter, then use a 12 volt bulb you know is good. If you still don't have power at the wires then I would just run new ones too the fuse block.

If they do have power then something is wrong inside the outlet it's self and you can buy one for $6.00 at auto parts stores or most of the super stores.

Hope that helps.

Let us know what you find.

Mine doesn't have one in it at all yet...Hopefully by tomorrow so I'll be doing about the same
Im adding 3 power ports under the dash and one cigarette lighter in the dash. Im new to Jeeps so I couldn't tell you anything about the fuse block yet until tomorrow when I get in there, but they all kinda look the same to me, and I wired a couple race cars from scratch, so I like to think I'm qualified

If you run a new wire like I plan to, and cant find a fused place to tap into, you can take the power off the battery of course, or what I plan to do if there isn't an open place is take it from the main positive lead feeding the block and using an inline fuse. Make sure your on the downstream side of the fuse if you tap in, so when U pull the fuse it kills the power to the lighter (I almost forgot to mention)

Good luck!

I'm more inclined to wire it to a fusible link but dont' even know if I have one. (My only Jeep education is my very old truck...)

If your info works out you get full credit and a new thread!

I forgot to get back to this. I found a couple hot spots that were open for spade connectors in the block under the dash. So I ended up just plugging in a spade connector and running an inline fuse right near the block so could be located easily.

How'd you make out?

Just to confirm, does it not work with the key on? Mine in my TJ doesn't work if the engine is turned off. Perfectly normal for some vehicles. I assume the lighter doesn't work either.

I'm printing out your advice. Dash lighter swap on hold for now. I had to replace the stock water pump today. Started leaking EXACTLY when the odometer hit 70,000 miles---go figure.

Thanks for the good info--restoring dash lighter is next.

I'm betting on the lighter being corroded as the culprit. These are cheap crap.

I too installed a 3 port power strip under the center of the dash. I just ran a wire through a firewall grommet up to the battery. Put an in-line fuse in place, and I'm good to go. Plus, by running direct, you needn't worry about switched versus unswitched. The ports are always powered. Obviously the ground just went to the nearest screw.

Very interesting. I've owned jeeps for a while now, so I'm ALWAYS expecting the Expensive Fix, not the cheap fix!

It never occured to me I could be back in business for $3! Already going to Checker for filter/fluids...might as well try it.

Don't forget to put the fuse as close to the battery as possible

ALL plugs(male), for DC power outlets, (cig lighters), have a 5/10 amp fuse internal, so your objective is to protect the jeep dash wiring, only

Another alternative is to pick up a new outlet at any auto parts store. I don't think they are more than 5 bucks. I got one with a flip top, it came pre-wired with a lead and a ground. I put mine in my center console and spliced power off the stereo.
