rear axle leak

Would overfilling the rear diff cause a leak at the end of the axle at the rim?

to the right side of differential should be numbers on axel to tell you what it is, and yes
over filling can put more presure on seal causing it to leak!

Thanks, would you suggest that I just keep an eye on it instead of pulling the axle yet?

If the Prior owner changed it then we really need to see it to help ya. Cause some axles are super easy to replace the seal and others are a pain. But yes over filling will make it leak but normally not there,

But to add to this. by oil coming out at the end of the axle then your brakes are more than likely shot.

Yes could be over filled
On a flat surface pull fill
plug(round rubber) and see if it runs out , if it
does let it

Well over filling normally does not mean it will leak out the axle seal. Its a good seal and will keep the oil in if in good shape.
But what will cause it to leak is if the VENT is clogged up. The heat from the gears will expand the oil and force it out. Check the vent to see if its clear.

Never saw a rubber plug with blue RTV on it before.
