Rear End cover?

I want to change the gasket and fluid in my rear end. I do not know much about wrangler rear ends, so im new to them. I see a rubber "button" that is on the rear end. There is no nut or bolt to take out to add fluid. So im assuming that that rubber thing is what im talking about. But i just want to make sure. And how do i take it off? And do i need to replace it after taking it off?

Thanks!
David

The fill plug in your Jeep is rubber, it just pops in and out. When you take the rear cover off (just take all the bolts out around the outside) you will probably have to hit it with a hammer or something to break it loose. Once it's off and the gear oil has drained out, you can scrape the RTV silicone off the cover and the axle housing. Then you will want to put about a 1/4" bead all the way around the opening, and bolt the cover back on (I usually use Blue RTV silicone, just ask for it at the auto parts store, they will know what you are talking about). At this point there are mixed messages; I usually just install the cover and then fill with gear oil, but some people will tell you to let the RTV dry for 24 hours before refilling. If you have the time, go ahead and let it dry, otherwise fill and go! Good luck, hope this helped more than it hurt!

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

Hey, I have a 1989 Wrangler Islander, and it has a 3/8" metal, screw-in plug for the front AND rear differentials.....not a rubber plug....

????????

Do I have a 'super rear end'?? hehehehe?

Any ideas?

You most likely have an aftermarket cover Great White.

Wrangler93, Make sure not to put too much silicone on there. I have seen a lump of excess silicone that destroyed a set of gears. You have to remove the cover to get the lube out.

You may be able to find a gasket, its typically just a paper gasket; but honestly the silicone make a gasket works very well.

Like said earlier, you can put the make a gasket on and bolt the cover back on then let it set up, or just fill with oil. I have not had a problem with just filling, but sometimes if its not cleaned up right it can have a problem sealing.

What I do is clean both surfaces real good and even use rubbing alcohol or brake cleaner on those surfaces to make sure there is no oil left. (it wont seal well if there is oil left), then I squeeze the silicone on the cover, carefully place the cover on and without moving the cover any more than necessary I replace the bolts.
