replace Factory speakers in dash?

I have a 93 yj still has factory speakers they don't sound bad but I got some 4x6 kickers given to me they are brand new so I'm going to try them out. How hard is it to get the old ones out? How much dash do you take apart or do you just reach them from the back? Thanks any info appreciated.

as far as i remember its a pain. i think you have to pull the dash out, not all the way, but you have to loosen the whole thing and i think you can sneak them out. not easy though.

Thanks I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that. Probably not a half hour job I guess.

i can tell you for sure its not that. gotta be the only thing they designed as a pain in the neck, everything else is accessible accept the dash speaker.

def not easy. i was able to get my drivers side out with the dash still attached but couldnt get anew one in, and the pass side dash had to come out. i;m actually replacing my dash now and am trying to design a way to make it possible to pull and replace the speakers without fooling with the dash

When I did it i fought for an hour trying to reach under the dash with a wrench and every time I got it back there it stuck to the magnet on the speaker! should have seen that coming. Anyway I finally just folded the windshield down and pulled the dash back a few inches and there they were. It is only a few bolts and WELL worth the extra time to make it super easy. I have a set of speakers for my new jeep just waiting for some free time. good luck

I got both mine out without removing the dash...maybe I just have doublejointed wrists I did have to drop the ebrake release assembly on the driver side, and pulled both dome lights out to make room, but I got both my stockers out and the Polk Audio replacements in. They mount to studs on the inside of the dash - all you have to remove is 4 nuts per speaker.

I wound up doing the same as racer, except I pulled the tach out to get at the upper nuts on the driver side. Made reaching the top two much easier-but there is no easier way for the passenger side. Just remember that if you replace the stock speakers you may want to cover the replacements with a thin stretchable fabric to act as a dust/water barrier from your cones. The speaker vents allow for a lot of dirt/water to travel directly to them without something in the way.

Mine was a real pain cause the studs were bent and stripped. I had to cut them off and add some bolts with spacers to keep the speaker off the dash. Lucky for me I the dash apart for paint.

Good luck I remembered when i tried to figure this out ,i couldn't grab them from underneath so i got my dremel and cut a rectangle around it, you'll then see how its attached pretty werid but now you see why you couldn't just yank it off.I then cutt out some metal grill sheet and just put it right back where the old metal piece was.
