Replacing ECU with new distributor and carb

I've been having issues with the ECU on my 87 wrangler (2.5L 4 cyclinder), burned up 3, and can't figure out why. I am considering taking the thing out and replacing with a new distributor and replacing the throttle body with a carburator. Anyone ever do this? Things to consider? Thanks.
