Rough Day with the YJ...

So last night we got freezing rain, and then heavy wet snow on top of that. I go out to start the jeep in the morning and my drivers side door is stuck, i tugged so hard i think i broke the outside handle on my full door. So i say whatever and climb in the passenger door and start it up. Driving to work on some crappy roads I realize that it wont let me shift out of 2nd. I slam the shifter forward and it disengages, getting pissed now. Get to work go on lunch and i apparently left it in 2nd, go to shift out of 2nd to reverse to back out of my parking spot and it is stuck again!! This time it would not let go of second at all. I tried to hold clutch to floor and roll backwards but couldn't do both at same time so i throw it in 4low and blast over a snow pile and out onto the main street in town. Going down the road it still doesn't want to let go of 2nd until i beoch slapped it into my radio haha...after that it was fine but why would it get stuck like that? When i bought it the PO said it "has bad syncros in 2nd could this have caught weird and caused it to stick? I haven't had any problems like this since i bought it except a little grinding when shifting into 2nd. Anyway wanted to vent and if anyone has any bright ideas i would like to hear them. Its of course an ax5 also. Thanks Guys n Gals for listening.

And because no one wants to read a thread without something to look at:

if the syncros are bad, they are not getting any better
you could try some thinner synthetic oil in the gear box as a temporary fix

Skip second, shift from 1st to 3rd.

Once it's warmed up (inside the transmission), does it shift better?

Does it shift into and out of 2nd with the engine off? Or is it the same? What size engine? If it's geared right you might just have to skip 2nd for now.

2.5 stock gears so 4.10? and once it is warm it does shift in and out. I can shift into and out of 2nd no prob most of the time running or not. The only reason i said anything about the syncros is because thats what the PO told me but i have not confirmed this, is this something that is likely to happen with a bad syncro?

Thanks guys really!

Yes, 2.5's came with 4.10's stock.

Sounds to me like it might be time to change the tranny oil.

Because forcing it is always a good idea.

Drain and refill tranny with a good synthetic GL-5 75W-90 fluid and see if that helps any. Bad synchros should make it hard to shift into gear not out of.

Your symptoms are not uncommon. It's just old. At the shop, we get old cars all the time with similar symptoms, GM, Ford, Toyota, it don't matter.

You either deal with it, skip second gear until the transmission temp gets warm (especially difficult in winter) -or- you rebuild the transmission -or- you exchange it for another.

We have NOT had success by changing to synthetic. It's not lack of lubrication, it's that the trans is just worn out. But it's a cheap thing to do, so you're welcome to try a synthetic oil change.

I do appreciate ur input for replacing tranny fluid with synthetic however the sarcasm is not appreciated. It wasn't my first choice but my last I'm just looking for help not criticism. Thanks to everyone else I'll be looking into a replacement transmission moving forward.
