Cool Should I buy the 1990 Jeep Wrangler??

I have been looking for an old CJ to have as a fun summer car and to learn to do some minor repairs on. I recently found a 1990 Wrangler (standard) with about 150k on it for sale for $1300. This wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but it seems like a good deal.

There are some problems though... the body under the doors is rusted through and the back bumper is rusted out pretty bad as well. The top needs to be replaced and the seller tells me the fuel injectors are bad and the drivers side door doesn't close right. (the jeep starts everytime even with the bad injectors if you turn the key half way to build gas pressure and the door works if you close it just right)

Am I getting into too much here for a first project car? I don't have a ton of money to invest, I am just looking for something fun to drive without too many problems and to learn to work on. The rust worries me because I don't know if I could replace a tub... lots of time and money!

What do you think???

That sounds like a parts donor to me, not a project vehicle unless you subsribe to the theory of Just Empty Every Pocket

Cool More questions

The YJ also has new 31" mud tires that are probably worth a decent amount, but it has no lift kit. Is this a problem? Could I just replace the side panels without having to replace the tub? The only bad rust problems are under and behind the door. It is a 4 cylinder... would it be a reasonable project for a novice to replace fuel injectors?

I am considering offering $800, but it seems like even at $1300 I could recover most of my money from selling parts if it ends up being a beater.

I appreciate the help!

For around $1300 If things dont work out I'd part it out for some serious money, You could get a decent amount of $$ on ebay for parts.

I'd say go for it

I didn't think the 1990 Wranglers had fuel injection. Are you sure?

Cool Fuel Injectors

To be honest, I don't know for sure if it does have fuel injectors... I don't know a whole lot about Jeeps yet. The current owner told me that it needs new fuel injectors and that is about a $200 repair. Someone else told me that the 4 cylinders did have fuel injectors but not the V6.

Thanks for you help and anymore comments are much appreciated!

I meant 6 cylinder, my mistake. Are you sure that the 1990 YJ 4 cylinders didn't have fuel injectors? If so, do you know any other reasons why you would need to turn the key for a minute before you start it each time?

Thanks!

I think the 90 4 bangers did have fuel injection. As far as the rust goes. You can buy all kinds of replacement panels to weld in. If you can weld or know someone that can it shouldn't be too much of a problem. This link shows a CJ-7 part, but with a little digging you can find the right parts.

The rear crossmember is available too. Hey, you live in NY, anything over a couple of years old is going to have rust.

Frame??

My thoughts were how bad is the frame rusted out? I would stay very far away from it if the frame is shot. Check the rear by bumper, near every shackle mount, steering box... and everything in between! :really: Body work is easier than properly fixing the frame... IMHO

HTH

On the engine... I thought all YJ 4 banger's were injected, 87 on up? :incog:

Stay safe

$200 to replace the fuel injectors sound extremely low to me. Add in the rust, and the 150K miles and I think you're biting off more than you can chew. Instead of injectors, you would be better off getting a 4.0 and dropping it in. Since the motor already has 150k on it, if u don't replace it now and just go with injectors, then you'll be replacing it in the near future anyway. I'd pass on this one.

something to think about, I had an injector issue with mine and tried a motorvac and it cleaned it up. find a shop that has the equipment and try it.. might save you a hundred bucks or so. as for the rest of the vechile.. if you want a project your getting yourself into one. goodluck
